As a last-minute booking and the second cheapest hotel we could find, we were a bit worried it would be grotty but it was good especially for the price - very clean and a nice room in a historic property. The stairs to the bathroom might not be ideal for young children or disabled people, but we thought it was cute - not as big as a chain room but more characterful, cosy and slightly quirky. Shower etc worked well. Comfy bed (high and kind of four-poster with a lacy top). Full English breakfast (included with our booking) was tasty; cheapish sausage but quite nicely cooked. Pleasant staff. Very close to the seafront and a short walk into the city centre. No view from our room and no car parking - but we knew this in advance and it didn't matter. It will be nice when the scaffolding around the entrance has gone - although this didn't really affect us - as the hotel and square have attractive Regency architecture. Limited TV channels due to poor reception - however, better to be out in Brighton than watching telly. Obviously doesn't offer the amenities of a large hotel, but good for a city break.
