“Great Shame”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Stayed at The Old Ship for a 1 night stay as we had tickets for Ice Show. The Old Ship has a great location with a car park, however parking is charged at £23 per day. This is on top of the well over £100 per night per room cost without breakfast. The staff at the Hotel could not be faulted and were very welcoming but, oh dear, the reception and bar areas are very ill planned out and totally lacking in the atmosphere one would expect in a period hotel of this type. The room, however, was our biggest disappointment. When we first entered the room we could see we had a room at the front with a sea view but our joy was short lived. We were met with scaffolding and netting outside the whole of the outside of the section of the hotel where our room was located which of course totally interrupted what would have been a splendid view. Although the room was a reasonable size the bed was fairly small, and the room was in dire need of redecoration. We noticed a new radiator and windows had been fitted and there was a flat screen TV which unfortunately because of the layout of the room was not easy to see when in bed. The biggest put off was the peeling, mouldy and in some places quite dirty wallpaper and a large area on the ceiling where there had been a leak from the room above. The smell in the room was of old damp mixed with the paint smell from outside. Didn't see any sign of airconditioning. There were also a couple of holes in the bed linen. The bathroom looked as if it had been half renovated and then left. Wish hotels would fork out for shower screens and not the dreaded shower curtain - horrible. The hotel certainly did not appear like a 4 star. (We have stayed at other Barcelo Hotels which have been much better and also cheaper.) The good points were that there was no dust and and the rooms had been well cleaned. We were glad we only had 1 night. Even considering the high cost of staying in Brighton it was certainly not worth the money. Don't know what foreign visitors must think. It is a great shame because if more money was put back into looking after these fine period hotels they would easily rate as highly as some of the prestigious hotels abroad.

Room Tip: Rooms on front are noisy but have a sea view.

“Great location, quirky charm”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

This is clearly a hotel with a history. Don't stay here if you're expecting a flashy new, all mod cons, type of hotel. Do stay if you're looking for a hotel with great character and a really good location. Service was good, and breakfast runs late at the weekend which is good if you want a lie in. I'd certainly recommend this hotel for its value and location.

“Noisy”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

The Old Ship is in a great location, but beware of the noise. I stayed over on a Thursday night for business. All I wanted was a good night's sleep ahead of a presentation the next day. Unfortunately, I could barely sleep until the party in the street outside subsided at about 3am. I would definitely recommend avoiding the first and second floor rooms in favour of something on the 4th or 5th floors where it is bound to be quieter.

“Overnight stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

On arrival at the hotel, there was nowhere to park to unload our luggage. Checking in was easy. We stayed in rooms 120 (Premier suite) and 121 (Double)
Parking is available, but at the cost of £23 per day and the hotel holds no resposibility for the safety of the vehicles.
Wifi is available throughout the hotel, but is charged. Not good for a four star hotel.
The hotel is comfortable and clean and the staff are very attentive and courteous.
The hotel is not very disabled friendly as there are no ramps, small lifts, heavy doors and a revolving entry door. Wheelchair users would not cope well.
The rooms are clean and comfortable, although housekeeping could have been more attentive. A bulb was missing from a table lamp and the tea/coffee supplies were minimal, although more was brought on request. One of the kettles had to be replaced and there was no spare blanket in room 121. We found a rusty stanley blade on the table which could have been found by a child.
In the bathroom, (room 120), there were 7 cracked floor tiles which could be dangerous. The blind in the bathroom did not close right down which allowed anyone in the street to see into the bathroom which has clear windows. The hook on the back of the bathroom door was missing.
The windows were filthy on the outside and I feel that an hotel chain as large as Barcelo could afford window cleaners.
On Thursday night, Corporate guests were making a lot of noise in the hotel up until 2am.
The noise from the street was very disturbing all through the night, which is not unusual for Brighton, but the windows were too thin to dull this.
All in all, the stay was pleasant, mainly due to the excellent, friendly staff.

“Smart, clean and friendly......”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

This hotel is ideally located with friendly approachable staff.
The breakfast was fantastic, the bar area was clean and spacious.
The only down side to the whole experience was our room was not cleaned during my two night stay nor was I given fresh towels........
Once I contacted reception, they were very apologetic and couldn't do enough for us.
