Stayed 23 - 25 May 2012 in a standard room on 3rd floor back. No idea what more expensive rooms were like so can only speak from own experience. Room was good size, bed was lovely and comfy. Being at back away from lifts (room 316) it was lovely and peaceful. Room and bathroom very clean but the desk chair was stained and the back had a hole in it and the windows were very dirty, as well as the frames being scruffy. There was some limescale on taps, and no soapdish so soap kept slipping into basin. Bath could only be filled via shower and using a loose plug, no way to switch water supply from shower to bath mode. However, the shower was great with lots of hot water and easy controls. Loo flush was inadequate, requiring up to 6 goes to clear. Curtain was hanging off rail at top, but this was immediately sorted out by hotel staff once reported to Reception. No writing paper in desk, which is usually the case. We only had breakfasts at hotel, and these were a disappointment. Scrambled eggs were rubbery and just warm and served in a dish with a broken cover handle. Bacon was just about warm, sausages were lovely on day one but almost rubbery skinned on day 2. The toaster was old and scruffy and slow. On the 2nd day milk at table was served in a drinks glass instead of a small jug - why? Both days I had to ask for a knife to butter my toast - here the staff responded immediately, and tea or coffee was in constant supply. However, for me the absolute worst thing was that the plates were cold instead of being placed in a warmer, this meant that your food was cold before you had finished eating it especially as it had only been warm in the first place rather than hot. All these are small things but if put right, would make a huge difference. Here I do have to say that all the young people working there were were smiling and helpful.
As to the hotel itself, in places it is glorious, in others a very faded glory, almost neglected, with knobs on banisters missing, chipped wood and a worn carpet. I cannot speak for the spa, as I did not use it. However, all the staff, and in particulary, the lovely young gentleman on reception, were just super, welcoming, friendly and extremely responsive and helpful. If they were only supported more in environmental terms, they would make the place perfect.I hope they are valued by the management, who I feel are not investing enough in the place, or who do not have the money to do so. Despite all this, I did actually enjoy my stay, I just kept feeling that a 4 star hotel was "just out of reach around the corner".
Room Tip: Don't worry about lack of a view at back, as these rooms are quiet.
