“Old fashioned hospitality”

We have just returned from a 'bargain' weekend at the Mercure. The hotel is a great old Regency type building with a wonderful central staircase and chandeliers and passages galore. Just taken over by Mercure (the lady in the tourist office thought it was still the Ramada!) it is in the process of gentle renovation, but who cares about a shabby carpet when the staff is so welcoming and helpful. We were early, but our cases were taken care of while we went for a walk. The reception staff are so helpful, especially Nicole. The restaurant was excellent, again, professional smiling service, and breakfast first class with everything from fresh fruit to the full english.
It was a special weekend for us, as illness had cancelled my birthday, and when the manager learnt of this he very kindly upgraded our room to a sea view. which was a real treat. We will certainly be back.

“A great place with a bit of charm”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

I booked this place for 2 nights with full knowledge of what I was getting and it delivered the total Brighton experience we were looking for. The hotel is in a beautiful older style building that has so much charm right opposite the seafront. We had a king room for a couple and a standard double for my single mother. Both rooms suited us perfectly. Our room on Level 1 was amazing - huge with a king size bed and the lagest private terrace I have ever seen in a hotel. We could have entertained 50 people on it with views directly out to sea. Even in January, being able to view the Sea makes for a very special time. I am sure we had the best room in the house. The standard double was of a high standard although no view.

Check in was pretty easy although the records did not show my prepaid breakfasts - this was quickly rectified when I showed my internet receipts and no further questions were asked.

Contrary to other reports here, we found parking dead easy - right in front of the hotel and more at the back. The location is good and a decent walk gets you to the lanes etc.

Breakfast was stock standard Mercure style - a reasonable selection on the buffet. Hot choices cooked to order offered some variety and were tasty and well prepared. We did not use the restaurant for other meals.

We got a great internet deal through the Mercure site and felt we got great value for money here. Being off season, I guess the Brighton market is pretty competitive.

I would stay here again - mainly because of the vibe in the hotel. It is a grand old building that has been nicely renovated without being destroyed by modernisation. Expect to get a few quirks but that made our stay all the more fun and authentic.

Thanks to the team for having us - we really enjoyed it.

Room Tip: The rooms on the front offer a great Brighton experience

Dear GlebeTraveller

Thank you for your valued review on your stay with us.

I was delighted to read your positive review and your feedback on your hotel experience.

A number of our upgraded sea view rooms do have ‘amazing balconies’ which make for a fantastic place to admire the sea vista at any time of the year!

I was sorry that there was some confusion over the prepaid breakfast and I was glad that this was swiftly resolved at the reception desk.

Thank you once again, and next time you’re in Brighton please be sure to come and see us!

Kind regards

Matthew

“Number 1 Mercure Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

Stayed here with my daughter last weekend. On arrival, the friendly receptionist gave us a complimentary upgrade to an executive room with sea view. The reception area is well looked after and is in keeping with the age of the hotel, sweeping staircase & chandeliers, a very warm entrance. Our room was spotless and appeared to have been completely refurbished, individual heating controls for the radiators which is a must, the usual flat screen tv, what looked like a new powerful hairdryer and the bathroom was stocked with a basket of toiletries. We ate in the restaurant both nights, the food was outstanding (compliments to the chef) such a shame as both nights there were only a few tables taken, must be a bit disheartening for the kitchen staff who obviously take such pride in the presentation and cooking of the food. The restaurant waiter in the evening was very friendly & efficient, one evening I asked if it was possible to have the dessert that I had had the previous night even though it wasn't on the menu, he said it would be no problem and promptly sorted it. We found the staff friendly and very helpful at all times. Cannot understand the negative reviews about this hotel, after seeing a few mercure hotels, this one is by far the best!

Dear HertsWrights

Wow! What a great review – thank you!

Whilst we are not the newest Mercure Hotel – (there was Hotel here in 1827!) we are proud of the heritage of this grand building and I’m pleased that you enjoyed your time with us.

Even more encouraging is your feedback regarding the service received which is our highest priority for all our valued customers.

Please let us know if you’re thinking of coming back to Brighton – we’d love to welcome you back again.

Kind regards

“good breakfast, average hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

There was confusion about our booking on arrival. Breakfast was included in our deal but this was disputed by the receptionist until we produced a print out of our booking as proof. Not the ideal start. Our room was clean and comfortable if small, and the bed was comfortable. Clean bathroom. Breakfast was good - plenty of fresh fruit, hot and cold buffet and a nice cafetiere of coffee. The hotel itself is tired looking in areas, but all in all good value if you get a deal (ours was £87 for standard double with breakfast) A pleasant 15 minute walk from the centre, and £4.50 in a taxi. We used the hotel car park which cost £15 per night.

Dear Gloria H

Thank you for taking the time to post your review on Trip Advisor.

I should like to reiterate my apologies sent to you separately regarding the confusion regarding the breakfast element of your stay. I was however pleased to note that after this initial frustration on arrival that you found breakfast to be good.

As an historic building we are have a rolling programme to improve the Hotel and we are working hard to update and maintain all areas. I was pleased however to read that you found the Hotel overall good value for money.

Thank you once again for your review, and I hope we may welcome you back to the Hotel in the future.

Kind regards

Matthew
