“GRAND BY NAME & GRAND BY NATURE”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Yes it may need a bit of a makeover and it may creak in a few places, you would too at this age, but there is no doubting that the service is 5 star. On arrival we were courteously greeted by the concierge who took the bags and arranged to park the car. Check in was a pleasure, the reception staff efficient and friendly. We booked a sea view room and it was fantastic. Yes a little dated but everything was clean and functioned well. The bed was very comfortable and the view was stunning. Breakfast was great with loads of choice. The restaurant staff were very friendly and helpful as were the staff in the bar. Would happily recommend this to anyone though pay for the sea view it is well worth it.

Room Tip: Ask for a deluxe room with a sea view. You pay extra but it is worth it.

Thank you very much for your kind comments following your recent stay.

In summary we accept that the Hotel shows it's age in places but we always endeavour to offer the very best levels of service to counter some of the frayed edges.

I am glad to hear that you feel we achieved this so well and look forward to welcoming you back again soon

Thank you again for writing

“It could have been fantastic....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

It's a shame that you can't give half marks because we would have given The Grand 3 1/2 marks. There is no denying that the building is impressive. However, the rooms are past there best and in serious need of some TLC.

We arrived near midnight, after attending a wedding at another Brighton hotel. I would like to say that our first impression of the staff was as impressive as those the building but unfortunately it wasn't. We were greeted at reception by a surly man, who seemed unimpressed with our arrival. After a swift and abrupt check in we made our way to our room. We stayed in room 101. The room was a fair size. There is definitely a need for a freshening up of the rooms. Wallpaper was peeling in places and in the bathroom the flooring was coming away from the wall. The bed however was AMAZING, both huge and incedibly comfy. I would have expected a well stocked mini from a 5* hotel, alas there was not one. The Grand can be commended on an excellent breakfast. The staff were courteous and efficient. The breakfast itself was vast and there was something to suit anyone's tastes.
Our stay was comfortable and functional but you could defnitely not call it luxurious. Not what we expected from a 5* hotel.

Thank you for your review on Trip Advisor

I have noted the negative comments you have posted and I am sorry that we failed to deliver on some elements of your stay.

However I was also very pleased to note your compliments regarding the quality of bed, the staff and your breakfast.

Finally on the point you make regarding the mini bar I am sorry you felt compelled to complain however I would respond by saying that all rooms have fridges which can be stocked on request by our 24 hour room service team.

Thank you again for your comments

“The not-so Grand”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

This iconic Brighton landmark sadly disappoints. The imposing facade, beautifully restored after the IRA bombed the hotel in the 80s and the breathtaking lobby with its classic staircase are the beginning but also unfortunately the end of the hotel's charm.

We stayed for a wedding and saw inside a number of the rooms. Some were best described as fading grandeur, others just fading. Our good sized room with a king bed and a spectacular sea view was spoilt by peeling wallpaper, stained paint and was uncontrollably hot (no,air conditioning) even in February with the temperature outside at -5 deg C.

Go visit this hotel to see the architecture but dont stay there.

Room Tip: Ask to see the room before you accept it. The quality varies enormously.

Thank you for your comments on Trip Advisor

I am very sorry you were disappointed with the quality of the room you were allocated. We accept that rooms do vary in size and decor and we are working hard to ensure we bring each type of troom up to the same standard - with a programme of redecoration already underway

On your other points I am glad that you were impressed by the facade and the interior lobby and staircase - something that is of course very synonymous with The Grand

“Good but relies heavily on name”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012 via mobile

I stayed in The Grand when attending a conference at the Brighton Centre so the location was fantastic with only a 2 minute walk to the venue. The staff were fantastic and really friendly, they all took the time to speak to my 8 year old son and made him feel at home. Another plus was the free wifi and broadband provided in the room. Check-in and check-out were both fast, efficient and friendly.

However, the bedroom was basic and slightly dated. Bathroom was specious but no magnifying mirror. Restaurant was a bit slow at breakfast but was friendly (staff moved fast to clear the table - happened twice when I left the table to pick up some food).

All in all I had an enjoyable stay, however, I am not convinced that it was worth the additional cost.

Thank you for your comments following your recent stay at The Grand

Overall I am pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay notably the service, location and the free wifi which we have recently upgraded to be wireless through the whole hotel and is proving to be very popular with business guests in particular.

However I am sorry that there were also a few small negatives - but hope these won't put you off returning again

Thank you again for taking time to post your review

“Not-rumoured not-so "best Sussex cream teas"”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

We went to The Grand as a party of seven for a special occasion on Saturday. Our first disappointment was to be seated in the King's Restaurant as opposed to being in the Victoria lounge, bar and terrace. The atmosphere was soulless and it was clear the restaurant had been greedy in terms of accepting more bookings when it simply would not have been able to accommodate. The King's Restaurant is very tired-looking. Had we been told where we would be seated at the time of booking, we would have gone somewhere else.
We ordered one afternoon tea per person and as we could not eat it all, we asked for take-away - not unreasonable if you are paying £25 or so per person. There were about ten slim sandwiches, six scones and lots of butter-cream and many mini-cakes leftover. Alas, when we got home, we noted that they had decided not to pack the sandwiches and the cream! Given what the name of the hotel is supposed to inspire - we found this level of service very disappointing and we will be taking our custom elsewhere next time.

The only plus side of the experience is the quality of the food itself and the portion. Make sure you eat it all there though...

Thank you for your review on Trip Advisor following your visit to The Grand for afternoon tea

We are very proud of our afternoon tea and it is fair to say that it is popular. I am sorry that you were disappointed with the location of your table. Given the size of your party I can only assume we took the decision to seat you in our restaurant terrace.

In terms of the confusion relating to you taking away food at the end of your tea, again I am very sorry that this wasn't done properly. My only comment would be that, if there were risky perishable food items such as dairy products (egg, mayonnaise, cream etc..), we would not normally recommend or allow these to be taken for consumption later on for obvious reasons. However I am sorry that this was clearly not communicated to you at the time

In summary I am sorry that you have gone away disappointed so much so that you felt compelled to write your feelings on TA. As such I would very much appreciate it if we could correspond again separately. In doing so I am sure I can restore your faith in our Hotel . Perhaps you would be so kind as to get in touch with me direct using the address on our web site.

I look forward to hearing from you

Kind regards
