“Brighton Rocks”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2011

I stay at Seadragon every time I visit Brighton and it's always excellent. The staff are so friendly, nothing is too much trouble for them and they're really knowledgeable about things that are going on in the city. The location is also really good, right in the middle of town and opposite the beach. I would highly recommend this hostel to anyone looking for a relaxed friendly stay in Brighton.

“Excellent location , young and fun”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 November 2011 via mobile

This is exactly what I would expect from a backpackers. Excellent location and very central. Our room was basic but clean. ( the manager informed me they were about to begin a refurb) Room rate was very reasonable. I would not hesitate to stay here again.

“Reality bears no relation to the website!”

This hostel is NOTHING like the website, which implies that it is a friendly family run business. Staff were very young and rather drunk when we checked in, and we didn't see much of them over the whole weekend.
We stayed in 4 bed dorm, which was a box room with 2 sets of bunk beds, barely enough floor space in between for 2 people to stand at the same time.
We were given a mixed-sex dorm room with no warning at time of booking or checking in.
The entire hostel smelt of dirty laundry, the dorm carpet clearly hadn't been hoovered for weeks and the surfaces were dirty. The bathroom door didn't lock, and we were sharing the bathroom with 4 males. My friend & I had to go to the bathroom in pairs, one to guard the door while the other had a shower! The bathroom wasn't cleaned during our stay, neither was the bedroom (dirty bedding from a guest who had checked out was left crumpled on one of the beds).
The kitchen was completely disgusting. The surfaces were dirty, the sink blocked with old food, and the items provided for the "complimentary breakfast" were of the lowest quality possible. The chill out rooms in the basement were awful! They looked like catacombs out of a B-horror film.

OK, so the hostel was cheap and the location was good but I had such an awful experience that I wouldn't ever come back to this place. I'd rather spend twice the price for somewhere else.

Room Tip: Book elsewhere!

As the member of staff that checked you in I can happily confirm I was not 'drunk' nor had I anything to drink :)

You booked your dorm room via Hostel World, it clearly states all our rooms are Mixed-Sex, you also said it was okay for you to stay in the smaller dorm via e-mailed previous to your stay.

The lock to the bathroom is working, if it was not working at the time of your staff a member of staff would of happily repaired it for you.

The Kitchen is there for everyone to use, we clean as much as possible and have signs asking guests to clear up after they cook but someone they choose not to for whatever reason.

The 'chill out' room is upstairs behind reception, the eating tables downstairs are really popular with everyone that stays with us, sorry they are not to your taste. Our Kitchen is rated as the 'Best you are likely to see in a Hostel' - Lonely Planet :)

“A good hostel in a good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2011

This hostel was 'good' without being 'great'. I was in a twin room (one bunk bed) - the beds were comfortable. There wasn't anywhere to put things (cupboard, etc) but the room was small so there were few options. The shared bathroom was clean and everything in it worked. The kitchen was large and well-stocked.

The communal area with TV, books and bean bags is not really conducive to sitting and chatting with new friends, as it is in some hostels. This one is situated behing the reception desk, so not really a good location for a communal area.

The location of the hostel itself is good - just off the seafront and maybe a 15-20 minute walk to the railway station, Brighton Pier and the centre of town. Brighton itself has loads of places to eat and drink.

Room Tip: A twin room is a better option than a dorm, and the same price.

“Fine”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2011

Nothing major wrong with this hostel and would be happy to stay again if I was with a group of friends for a similar type of trip.

First impressions were not good because despite it clearly saying on the website that the peace and security of their neighbours (it's a residential street) was paramount and they would not tolerate any disturbances, the people working in the reception were playing booming music that would have been heard down the entire street. Luckily this stopped later in the evening though.

Bed was comfortable, got a great night's sleep, but extremely noisy, I was on the top bunk and every tiny movement made the bed squeak loudly, disturbing everyone else in the room, it made it seem like I was shaking the bed when all I was doing was turning around a little bit or something.

The breakfast room was quite well stocked but in a really filthy state and no cutlery or crockery was clean, though that was the fault of the selfish people before us and not the owners. It appeared that the toilet and shower were cleaned daily during our stay so that was good.

The price was quite high considering it was just a hostel. I have stayed in fully-equipped B&Bs for less than what I paid for this. I understand what a hostel is and was therefore not expecting luxury and was happy with the overall experience but felt the price was a bit high. But then I am from the countryside and this is the middle of a big and popular town so maybe I am not a good judge on this.

I would recommend to anyone wanting a cheapish, no-frills weekend. I would advise bringing you own plastic/paper bowls/cups etc. for the kitchen if possible though as it was in a disgusting state. Good location a short walk from the sea and just off the Western Road with hundreds of shops and food options.

Room Tip: Get a room with friends only and pay a bit extra to cover a vacant bed if need be
