Four of us booked two rooms at the George which is a lovely old building. The rooms were okay but in no way comensurate with the pricing and contained no antiques as promised.

The bathrooms were stocked with the cheapest super market brands and there were signs of neglect like an empty cookie jar. As we settled in during the late afternoon we could hear furniture being arranged in the bar below, which should have been a warning.

Our door wouldn't lock and we had to get the staff to help out a couple of times. After an unremarkable meal we went to bed, tired after a day's walking. The bedrooms might as well have been in the bar. The noise levels kept rising - cutlery, chairs scraping, car doors slamming, music until 1am when we hoped people would go home and the bar would be shut. But no, the merrymakers at the bar decided to launch into a rendition of "Thank you for the music" which really took the biscuit.

We raised this with the manager the next day and were offered "Well, it is an inn." by way of explanation. No apology. No offer to reduce charges. Straight from the Fawltey Towers School of Hospitality Training.

The George Inn is a lovely atmospheric 15th century inn. We had a lovely time. The staff were very friendly and helpful, The bar is welcoming with a roaring log fire. Beer and wine are good and they do a very good mulled wine ( lovely for cold winter evenings)
The food is exellent. We had moules mariniere, braised knuckle of lamb, sea bass with ginger and soy on a bed of noodles. They also do boards to share of charcuterie or seafood and good homemade desserts. The rooms are modernised but retain original features and nicely decorated with pretty linen. Our room had a view of lovely old red roofs of the surrounding cottages and the south downs into the distance. Set all this in the pretty village of Alfriston with its beautiful church and many walks along the river and into the south downs and you can see why we had a great time and a relaxing weekend break.

Decided to try the George as we attended a Murder Mystery at Deans Place. Looked super on the website and booked the Sir John Derring room. Very cold and heated towel rail wasn't working in bathroom, suspicious plastic containers under valves on radiators ready for leaks! Found a radiator key in drawer so hubby bled the radiator and hey presto heat (and leaks) The bedding was clean but the room was filthy, you could write your name in the dust and all drawers and wardrobe were disgusting not even clean enough to put dirty washing in. There is a difference between 'old world charm' and dirt and this dirt had built up over many, many months ~ light fitments, drawers, bedside cabinets, wrought iron bed rails etc. At 3.00am we were woken up by a loud bang, it was raining hard and the bathroom ceiling was leaking, it had poured into our washbag and when filled to the brim had fallen on the floor, taking with it several toiletries and my husbands shaver, now broken. The ceiling leak was not new as the watermarks and mould showed from previous incidents. In the morning we asked to see the manager but he/she was not around and dealt with a very young man who listened carefully and agreed the room was extremely dirty and not acceptable ~ he couldn't understand that housekeeping had 'let this room slip' and agreed that a bit of Mr. Sheen would go a long way to improving the cleanliness or lack of it. We were not charged for our experience but we didn't want a freebie we wanted a comfortable stay in what looked like a charming room. Breakfast was a farce with table tops (old world charm or worn out and needed a couple of screws to fix them)) that lurched from one angle to another if you put your arms down, by this time we had to laugh as the plates were nearly launched into mid air. How do places like this get away with it, I am sure these problems didn't just occur to us on this particular week end and why didn't we see a manager at all?

My wife and I stayed for one night on 29th August .We wanted to stay for a second night but the Inn was full because of a Wedding party .The George is situated in the beautiful village of Alfriston in the South Downs . The Inn is a village pub with lots of perion detail and dates from the 14th century .Our room was beautifully decorated and well appointed and looked out of the rear of the building to the Downs .All the staff were really friendly and helpful .We ate in the restaurant and the menu was very varied and the food very good .We took advantage of the £20 three courses option and were certainly not disappointed .For me the high point was breakfast ,served by the owner and outstanding in every way .There were a choice of cereals and juices and the cooked breakfast was a great start to the day .There was also a good selection of newspapers .I would have no hesitation in recommending this very fine Inn and will certainly be returning for a longer stay before the end of the year.

We had booked the George for a weekend away for four of us
stressed London ladies looking forward to walking and relaxing. The inn is wonderfully historical and we were happy with our comfortable rooms - particularly the Red Room with its 6ft wide bed. Beware the inn has no twin rooms. The first night we opted to eat in and booked a table in the restaurant. The whole night (Friday) there was only one other table of people eating. We felt the food to be OK but a lot of it was overcooked and it didn't seem particularly good value for money therefore as it was pretty expensive. This was disappointing as the previous reviews had said how excellent the food was - maybe it was an off day. The most striking thing about that dinner were the absolutely fabulous chips. The cooked breakfasts however were excellent - really nice local produce although none of us could bear the piped 'folk music' they insisted on playing! Generally, we felt the whole of Alfriston to be very expensive even compared to London prices. On the second night we managed to get a table at The Wingrove up the road where the food, service and ambience was much better for around the same price.

Food apart, the George was in a great position for us so we could wonder through the village looking at the shops and you can start many great walks from Alfriston itself. It was lovely to come off a day's walk to sit in the sun in the pretty garden with a glass of rose. I felt most of the staff were very friendly too with great advice about walks and pubs to stop at and lending us maps to help us.

  • Liked — Position in village, lovely historical bedroom and friendly advice
  • Disliked — Dinner was disappointing
