“What a find!”

I booked this hotel just a couple of weeks before I visited, at a special offer rate for the single room with breakfast included. The hotel is easy to find and is full of the original character from when it was first built as a large family house for a local gentryman. Lots of the original features remain, such as servants bells, wood panels and many other items. It was the end of December between Christmas and New Year but the hotel was still humming with life. The pleasantly heated rooms and public areas were welcoming and the bar menu had a beautifully filing Steak & Ale pie. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the hotels history and the local area, especially Richard the night manager whilst I was there.
The single room was comfortable and had a good TV plus iPod docking station, nice touch! Swanage is a great little town and nearby cliffs and beaches provide plenty of things to do. Visit Kimmeridge Bay and Tyneham while your there! Corfe Castle is a 10 minute drive away too. I will be definitley be back.

Room Tip: Get a room at the front for a sea view!

“Absolutely charming”

The ambiance of this hotel is outstanding with a splendid location in the centre of town. The decor is agreeably in keeping with the architecture. No matter who was in reception they were always extremely friendly and helpful. We had one of the larger rooms which gave two different views of the sea. It represented one of the best values for money which we have experienced. On a slightly negative note we felt that the quality of the evening meal did not quite live up to its price.

“Old fashioned charm and superb customer service.”

This is a lovely, old fashioned hotel full of quirky, period features but with top level standards of cleanliness and comfort. The service we received from everyone at the Purbeck Hotel was outstanding, from the lovely lady on reception to the friendly waiting staff. We got an excellent rate as the hotel was quiet after christmas and would love to go back in the summer to be able to enjoy the beautiful gardens. I really can't find anything to fault about this place, free parking on site, comfortable rooms with individual character, a good breakfast and helpful staff, what more could you want....

“An excellent last minute get away deal”

Very smart hotel, old fashioned character house with lots and lots of history. Sits in the centre of town up a gentle hill so easy to walk into town or to the beach to explore. The hotel sits in its own gardens with lots of nooks and crannies to explore - very peaceful. There is a separate modern hotel unit in the grounds, Louisa Lodge. We stayed in this part which is modern, clean and comfortable. There were a few knocks and scrapes to the paint work but these were very minor. The room was nice and cosy with everything we could need for a nights stay. Would do equally well for a week away. Two comfy chairs and a coffee table to sit and relax in front of the TV. Rather small bathroom but it was all clean and tidy with a nice deep bath and very powerful shower.

We didn't eat in the hotel but the menu looked good. We walked a short way down the hill to the Red Lion which was ok but just very basic pub grub. There is a variety of other restaurants and pubs within a very short walk so the hotel is really well placed to go out for a drink and meal and easily walk back.

Breakfast was cooked to order and all very nice although they do need a new toasting machine as you had to put bread through twice. (minor point but I've seen this mentioned in other reviews and agree) But juices and fruit, cheeses, etc were all topped up regularly and nice and clean and tidy.

Paid £75 for two people B & B for the night and I would say this was very fair, however this was a deal price and I'm not sure I would want to go back at the full going rate. They are advertising various short breaks in the winter and spring which include dinner and I would say from what I've experienced that these would be good value for money.

Room Tip: Bear in mind Purbeck House is the main old fashioned elegant part and Louisa Lodge is more in line w...

“Warm reception”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2011

From the first telephone enquiry unil checking out, the reception at Pubeck House Hotel was first class. Warm, friendly, helpful, polite - everything a reception should be - this hotel had it!. We saw about three receptionists during our visit al lof whom were excellent. PHH is not afraid of using mature staff and goodness me they reap rewards as a result! Two of the mature receptionists (and by this I mean anyone of 30) had the charm, ease, personality and confidence to do everything they could to make the guests' experience pleasant and 'sell' the hotel and Swanage at the same time, effortlessly and pleasantly. It was important to them that we had a lovely time - that was evident. Even on the Saturday morning of checking out we were told it would be ok to leave our car in the carpark if we wanted to enjoy more of the town before driving off. How many hotels offer hospitality after one has paid the bill these days?
Rooms were clean, spacious and comfortable and staying in the Louisa Lodge our accommodation was light and airy. Food was excellent, nicely presented and quite delicious. Although the young waiter was unsure about how to serve champagne, he was polite and interested and obviously enjoyed his work. Bar staff were helpful and friendly (again mature staff as well as young) and the lounge areas in the main hotel are comfortable and atmospheric.
My only criticism would be some of the young girls waiting on in the evening and at breakfast who really did appear to find it hard to smile and deliver breakfast especially,, with any degree of warmth or hospitality One evening one of our fellow guests spilled his wine during his main course and we had to help him as he had asked the waitresses for help and little was forthcoming. Other than the offer of taking his hardly touched main course away-and doing absolutely nothing to put him at ease - he received no help until we interevened. These girls might have been having an'off few days' but they could certainly learn one or two tips from the more mature staff. We would certainly stay again- in fact can't wait to go back.Purbeck House is delightful and one really does get the impression that everyone involved (so come on girls mentioned- step up to the mark!) enjoys being there and rejoices in the concept of good hospitality and service.

Room Tip: speak to reception and discuss your wishes/options/preferences - they are most helpful indeedI We re...
