My (now) husband was sent to work in Poole, originally for a few weeks, necessitating hotel accommodation during the week and after staying in several of the big chain hotels in Bournemouth and Sandbanks, found his way to the Marlins, via laterooms.com after several shocking experiences at supposedly 5 star hotels and much higher nightly room rates. He was so impressed that he rebooked for the following week. And the week after that. And the week after that.
His work assignment wound up being extended multiple times and as a result, he spent over a year working in Poole and almost a year staying at the Marlins.
During the summer, I spent a few weeks there with him and grew to love the place just as much, so much so that we've been back to visit since, and will doubtless be back again.
The owners are lovely and go above and beyond in their attention to detail - they're clearly dedicated and passionate about what they do and committed to continuously improving the fabric and fittings, up to and including major refurbishment like new bathrooms and complete redecoration of rooms. On a day to day basis, the rooms are always spotless and reset with the same attention to detail as on first arrival.
I've never felt more welcomed at a small hotel, and the service has reset all my expectations for staying in hotels. Every time I stay away from home I compare the experience to the Marlins - whether it's a tiny guest house or a large chain hotel. Many don't meet the standard - even five star hotels.
As with many experiences, it's the little things that make the difference. The breakfasts are great and the options plentiful. The beds are incredibly comfortable and the linens higher quality than in many larger and more expensive hotels I've stayed in. In fact, they're so good that we've now replaced all our linens at home for better quality items because we found ourselves missing the Marlins experience when we came home. The wifi is free, stable and a decent speed (again, something that I can't say for some larger establishments).
It's a great place to stay if you're looking for a base during the working week, and equally great for a relaxing weekend away.
It's exceptional value for money, and the consistency of service and quality is second to none.
