“Difficult to fault”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Excellent location on the East Cliff with good views and a short walk down to the Pier. Staff very friendly with excellent service. Hotel clean throughout and the room was of a good size. Breakfast was excellent. Good indoor pool which at times was as warm as a bath. For what I paid and for what I got I could not really fault it.

“Tired, worn, sad, rubbish spa but staff good.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

Booked through an agent (in India it seemed) who lied and told us we'd get a twin but didnt tell the hotel. Staff most apologetic and gave us free use of spa later on day we left. First (wrong room) was simply dreadful. Very clean but ancient. Decor great if you're 85yo, plumbing appalling - everything dripped all night long. Shower hose in bath (nothing to hang it on) only sent out small stream of constantly fluctuating water). Bed almost as old as decor. Quiet night probably because all other residents OAPs so that was good! Food was good but finished at 9pm. Lounge freezing cold all weekend and TV room out of bounds. Pool was LOVELY, really warm which was great but jacuzzi didnt have enough water in and sauna not warm enough. Spa experience TOTALLY ruined by FREEZING cold changing rooms (thats normal according to staff). We had stayed next door in the Cumberland and had loved it there so was majorally disappointed with Suncliffe. Only went for the spa which turned out to be rubbish. This was not a cheap hotel and feel we have been ripped off big time. Even when they have finished the redecorating the plumbing and rubbish spa would make this a no-no for us. Shame for the staff who did their very best.

Room Tip: Go for the seaview - only thing thats good about it!

Andrew Potter, Manager at The Suncliff Hotel, responded to this review

Dear dinghymadC,

An exaggeratedly harsh review I feel. Firstly I must clearly and unequivocally state that we do not have a “Spa”, we deliberately avoid the use of this terminology as It does not accurately describe the facilities we have on offer. This can go some way to me understanding your disappointment, however still I can’t help my feelings of your overtly ruthless comments.
Our Jacuzzi will naturally loose water due the traffic of users carrying water out of the until with them as the leave. We do fill this daily once the facilities are closed. Unfortunately occasionally if heavy use ensues this is required during the day and often it is the case that we will do so. As an unmanned facility, we sometimes need to be made aware of this. We are quick to act if we are made aware.

We are a traditionally decorated three star hotel we do not make any endeavours to conceal this fact. We regularly replace old/warn beds. We cater for many guests of different ages. Your comments as to the rationale of a quiet night’s sleep I find more that disrespectful.

As a group of three hotels in Bournemouth, each of our hotels is very consciously presented and marketed in a very different way. We understand the visitors expectations, tastes and comfort levels differ greatly. That is why we offer a diverse range of product for our guests. It is clear your particular tastes are perhaps more suited to our flagship hotel The Cumberland and their rates reflect their modern art deco style.

You state in the last paragraph of your erroneous ‘review’ that “Even when they have finished the redecorating the plumbing and rubbish spa would make this a no-no for us” - This I believe speaks volumes and reinforces my response above.

“Pool too warm for me!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

The Suncliff Hotel Bournemouth. This is the second time we have been here.It gets better each time.we went B&B,the breakfast was buffet style and was very good, fair amount to choose from. The room was a little small ,it was spotlessly clean and so was the rest of the hotel. The pool is a little small and very warm,a little too warm for me,although I did swim on two afternoons. The staff in the front office where most helpful and all the staff seemed happy going about their tasks. Will go again soon.

Dear ronSolihall,

Super to hear that on the hole you enjoyed your stay with us.

In my entire time here at Oceana hotel I think this is the first time I have ever had a guest comment that our pool is too warm. We take all guest feedback on board, It is true that over the past few nights we have had to raise the temperature of the water due to outside temperatures being on average just -2/3deg. We try to maintain a comfortable water temperature for our guests to enjoy. I will say that we test the temperature periodically and if we have any concerns we do not hesitate to adjust where we see fit.

We have many different room types, sizes and outlooks all are as you pointed out cleaned to an incredibly high standard. Our staff are a huge focus. We strive for customer satisfaction.

I have to commend you on a balanced, fair review.

I look forward to your return visit.

Best wishes,

“girls holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

person found this review helpful

We stayed at the suncliff hotel (room 31) from friday 3rd february 2012 to sunday 5th february 2012, our room was clean and comfortable and the breakfast was delicious. The staff were amazing and even managed to stop me from getting a parking ticket (didn't realise where I parked was for private residents only ooops) they then phoned me in my room to let me know so I could move my car before the traffic warden came back :-)..... We loved the jacuzzi and the swimming pool was clean and not to busy.
Our only criticisms are the female changing rooms are freezing, and our room was too hot as we were above the swimming pool but overall a fantastic holiday in a great hotel, its close to the town centre we easily walked it in 5 minutes (even in heels) and the views are amazing.
We would 100% go back.

Many thanks

Dear sarah b,

I have read your comments with great delight, and from a senior reviewer too.
We understand that parking rules are different from area to area and town to town. So we try to provide any information we can.

Are leisure suite is a fantastic facility to offer our guests and one we try hard to focus investment into and maintain a high standard of repair and cleanliness.

I look forward to your return visit very soon.

Best wishes,

“Two nights at The Suncliff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

We stayed nights of 29th and 30th January. Mostly other guests were with coach parties and they seemed to dominate the staffs' attention so we felt a little anonymous. However, we cannot fault the staff at all - very helpful and mostly smiling. Praises to Miguel in particular who brought water without being asked when I had a coughing fit!!
A few criticisims - we felt that the swimming pool could open at 7am so we could have had a swim before breakfast. The bed was a little on the small side and the room was cold even though the radiator was on full but we take into consideration that the room faced the sea. A bit of explanation before we were seated of how the buffet system worked would have been appreciated.
All in all though we enjoyed our stay - the food was excellent and the staff cannot be criticised in any way.
I expect we shall return.

Room Tip: Check if a coach party will be there as they can dominate the staffs' attention. Beds are on th...

5 February 2012
Dear Lucy M,

Thank you for taking the time to review the Suncliff hotel in such a balanced and fair fashion. We cater for a very wide demographic of guests from small children right up to older guests.

Customer focused service is our forte. We tailor ever aspect to our operation to ensure maximum comfort to our guests in a professional, efficient and warm, genuine manor. – I am glad to see this reflected in your review.

Our swimming pool opening hours are 08:00 – 21:00 this allows us adequate time to vigorously test the quality and temperature of our pool and ensures that we are running a safe and clean facility. We rarely find this to be an issue with our guests.

In Bournemouth as with the rest of the country we have experienced very low overnight temperatures indeed of late. During this time we did encounter a small drop in temperature in the hotel. We did provide extra heaters to supplement this and as a result received very few complaints.

I look forward to your return visit very soon.

Many thanks,

Andrew Potter
