“Better than expected”

We booked a two night stay at the Cumberland through Hotels.com. The day before travel I received an email from hotels.com saying that I had to pay an extra £40.00 to accommodate my 2nd child. (I had booked and been charged for a room for 2x adults and 2x children) so to be asked for more money just before traveling was totally unacceptable.

Reluctantly and after a long telephone call hotels.com decided to refund the extra fee and told me that I would have to add the £40.00 to my final invoice at the hotel.

We checked in at about 6pm and were seen very quickly by a very friendly and helpful member of staff called Alex.

On first impressions the hotel looked very modern and cool. We were given our room keys and on entering the room noticed that there were only enough beds to sleep 3.

I returned to reception and spoke to Alex who after searching on the booking system came up with a sea-view room on the first floor.

This was a slightly bigger room still with only enough beds to sleep 3 but a wonderful terrace (bigger than the room itself) overlooking the front of the Hotel and with a magnificent view of the beaches and the sea.

Alex promised to have another bed bought up to the room and that we would only be charged 1/2 the upgrade fee.

We had a lovely stay in the hotel, it was spotlessly clean throughout and all the staff we encountered throughout our stay were very friendly and welcoming.

The breakfast was a full buffet service consisting of cereals, fruit, eggs, bacon, sausages, tomatoes, hash browns, baked beans, a selection of fresh breads and pastries and of course teas, coffee and fruit juices. All well presented and lovely.

Overall we had a great stay here at the Cumberland and look forward to returning soon.

Room Tip: Room 107, great sea view and enormous terrace

“Birthday week-end”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2012

Four of us visited the Cumberland for my birthday week-end. This was my 5th visit to the Cumberland. On arrival we were greeted by very friendly reception staff but our rooms were not ready - even though they were guaranteed from 2.30 p.m. We went for an hour's walk and then managed to gain access to our rooms.

Both rooms were sea facing with balconies. Ours was a family room - a good sized room tastefully decorated but a little tired. The bathroom was also in need of a little refurbishment. Our friends were allocated a suite which was of a very high standard - apart from the bathroom which, again, was in need of a little refurbishment and had no towels. After two requests they were given towels - hand towels. Overall we were satisfied with our rooms and any problems were only minor.

We booked on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis. We could not fault the food which was excellent and served promptly by cheerful well trained staff. The bar area was, as ever, very comfortable and more in line with a 4 or 5 star hotel - the only downside was so were the prices - especially the price of the wine!

Overall our week-end at the Cumberland was very comfortable and relaxing - made more so by very helpful, cheerful, well trained staff.

“Thank you Cumberland Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

My wife and I have just returned home from a fantastic weekend at the Cumberland Hotel where we were treated to a break by our family to celebrate my wife's birthday.
Our arrival was a bit shakey to start with as the parking is a bit tight, then when we checked in the receptionist tried to charge us for a room that had been paid for in advance but that was soon sorted out, we were then given a key to the wrong room as we had booked a superior room with a coastal view and a balcony, the room we got was a standard room overlooking the car park at the rear of the hotel. But the staff were very apologetic and extremely polite and sorted it out quickly. From that point on everything was perfect, the staff were so helpful and polite, the meals were as good as you could possibly wish for and the service impeccable. The hotel is old and a bit creaky but it is spotlessly clean and well mantained.

Room Tip: I would recommend the rooms with the coastal view and balcony as even in February they are sun traps...

“A Christmas Party to remember...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

I had heard good things about the Cumberland Hotel prior to booking our company Christmas party there, and this favourable opinion was reinforced on the night. The party was a great sucsess; as the staff all enjoyed the food, hospitality and general atmosphere of the hotel bar and restaurant. Despite being extremely busy the hotel staff seemed to take it all in their stride and service appeared to be extremely well organised.to cater for so many diners and seperate parties. I think we would certainly consider booking it again this year...

“Good stay, good value.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Took advantage of winter sale and stayed for a couple of days (Thursday & Friday). Found all the staff very polite and friendly. Faulty light bulb tripped out the electrics and was resolved within 20 minutes on our second evening. Had a sea view room which was well decorated but the floors were creaky and the bathroom needs attention - very low cold water pressure. Food is excellant, but if stopping for more than a couple of days the Winter Fixed Menu would get boring.
