“A Place To Escape”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

I have stayed here a long time ago and what a change different owners make. In a difficult period for everyone who is tightening their belts you still need to escape and be able to relax but hard to find a place for a long weekend that is value for money and a place to take the whole family including our dogs! From the moment we stepped through the door it was like home from home, small hotel but plenty to do and in an ideal place for the seafront and long walks with the dogs (parks nearby) The staff could not do enough for us and the food was wonderful (lovely conservatory) but best of all being able to swim, have a sauna and jacuzzi nearby with quite times for adults without children. Definately coming back again and again when we have the chance. After a awful 2011 as a family we are ready to face 2012!

Room Tip: If you are two adults with one or two children then ask for the sea view room upstairs its wonderful...

“Great Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2012

Would definately recommend this hotel. Don't be fooled by the 2 stars, it should be a 3 for the extra facilities that you will find - warm indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna, beautician, on site hairdresser, kids room etc. Great bar and restaurant facilities. It was a pleasant stay. I have to admit that I was very dubious as it was only a 2 star but I was pleasantly surprised. It was a last minute booking and it was a great deal. Friendly staff and very welcoming! Rooms comfortable and clean!

We came for a Xmas break, booked 2 rooms 5,6 both very spacious and spotlessy clean. Breakfast was brilliant full English was delicious but had plenty of other dishes to choose from, even pancakes. We've been coming to Devon for years and we've been coming at least 6/7 times a year from now on this hotel will be where we will be staying lovely staff, fantastic facilities, open late so can have a swim after a shopping trip definitely 5 out of 5 from us.

“Avoid like the plague!”

My husband decided to book an apartment for a week at Maxton Lodge for my 60th birthday after being impressed with the photo's on their website. The apartment we'd been given was no.4. The carpets in the hallway of the apartment were stained & filthy and when we went into the lounge the stains were even worse in there. The receptionist said that they were being cleaned the following week. My husband rang the previous week to say that my brother & his wife would be staying with us for 1 night but the single beds only had bottoms sheet & pillow cases on. When I went to reception to ask for duvet covers I was give 2 doubles has they didn't have any single ones! One of the duvets was stained with what looked like blood. The kitchen looked very nice until we started to open doors - the door was missing off the ice box in the fridge so was 3 inches thick with ice, the oven was filthy and had bits of food all over it, and as for the microwave, well! under the plate it was corroded with rust not in just one place but ALL under the plate and the smell, surely must be a health hazzard. The apartment obviously hadn't been cleaned as there was still food in the cupboards from the previous occupiers. The overhall smell of the flat was awful, dirty & greasy. We checked out the following morning and was given the managers number so that we could complain to him. We met him on the Monday and to be fair to him he seemed totally embarrassed and did apologise. He gave us a part refund but on reflection we should have held out for a full refund as it totally ruined our weekend with my brother & his wife who had travelled 300 miles to be with us. The manager got it right when he said to us "I don't suppose you will stay here again". . . . . . . . . . . never a truer word!

Room Tip: Book somewhere else!

“Fantastic Stay, Would Recommend!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2011

Having read up on many of the reviews before going, I was really looking forward to our stay. We stayed two nights on the DBB rate.

I honestly cannot believe how good value this was and I really couldn't see a reason to stay anywhere else now to be honest!

The food was nice, with plenty of choice and really really good portion sizes!
The staff were so cheerful, sweet and helpful. They really left you alone to enjoy yourself but if you needed them for anything, they were there in a flash. Perfect!
The room, we had room 7 and it was nicely decorated and had everything we could want
The location was great, ample parking, close to Torquay, easy to find
The leisure facilities were amazing. You just don't expect to find a heated pool, a sauna and a jacuuzi, plus an outdoor pool here and it definitely was a bonus for us.

You would be crazy to go to Torquay and NOT stay here to be honest, that's how good it was :-)
