“Torquay Backpackers - a great budget place to stay.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

Myself and my friends decided to spend our end of year 'goodbye holiday' before going off to university in a dorm of 12 here. There were 12 of us, so we filled the room nicely. It has a sort of homely feel by the end of the week, the people are friendly and Sean the manager throws a weekly social free barbeque to get the guests talking and socialising. He is good at confronting issues when they arise, and don't make the mistake that we did by not telling him if another guest is affecting your night's sleep - he will do all he can to make your stay comfortable and reprimand them if they have been inappropriate. It truly does have an international feel upon entrance, and lots of international students and travellers choose to stay there. Things are decently clean and tidy, however the kitchen is a mess but this is due to the guests not cleaning up after themselves. You'll get used to it by the end of the week and it's not such a big deal. Remember to label your food in the fridge and you're fine. There's a lounge with a TV, and outside there is a pool table for whenever you feel like using it. You can also arrange to go zorbing for a very reasonable price, ask Sean for more details. I would definitely recommend this for backpackers wanting to stay in Torquay on a budget, it's a real experience and the facilities are good as well as the staff being laid back, but friendly and attentive when you need them to be.

Room Tip: It's great for those wanting to stay in a dorm with all their friends, I haven't personally...

arrived on 29 August, payment was taken straight away from me. Our bedroom had a beautiful big window and view of the street. Like the least: - My children were not impressed with the bedroom. The bunk beds looked as if they were hand made, duvets and pillows looked old, tatty and had hair on them, gone past their sell by date. We took this duvet down to show Shawn and point out marks on the linen and hair. Profanity came out of his mouth and started with "for F...ks sake". He answered just use the other one upstairs from spare bed and sat down to watch T.V.

Location is excellent my children love the location. Its is next to the shopping centre. We went out in the evening about 5 mins drive to park on the side of Torquay beach and take in the views. Behind us the hot air balloon ride went up and down. Children loved it thier and about 15 minutes drive down is Paignton Beach another lovely location and shops and places to eat. The Cinema there is right by the beach. We enjoyed the motorcyle event there.

What made out stay here really nice was the people staying in the hostel. Not once did i feel alone and had no one to talk to. Thanks to Adrian who played his guitar to us, Becky who is from New Zealand who recommended places to see. My children really enjoyed staying here, due to the people who kept us company and looked after us. This is a really lovely place to stay if you do not mind the bedroom, lovely people from all over the world. You feel like you are one big family. We left on the Thursday morning 1 September to go to North Devon at another beautifully decorated and nice bedroom, Hostel. My children said "we don't like it here we want to stay at Torquay Backpackers" . They wanted to come back due to making friends with Adrian the Rock Star they call him.

amenities Free computer to use and internet included plus free Wi Fi. Laundry service £4 one load washed and dried for you. Showers all have notices use them for 5 minutes. Tap water to be used carefully when washing cutlery. A wide variety of T.V channels available in the lounge to watch.

Room Tip: we were in on the 3rd floor and it was very quiet overnight.

“Very rude and unprofessional!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 March 2011

Me and my friends stayed for one night this month at the backpackers in Torquay for a friends 21st, hostel seemed ok, not the best i have stayed in but ok.
Rooms were fine, appeared to be clean with clean linen.
We did find it hard ten girls getting ready for a night out as there was only one mirror in our room and badly lit.
Now the problems started when 4 of us arrived back from our night out, we got in at around 2am and all got straight into bed, we were chatting about our night etc when we had a knock on door. There were three foreign girls next door asking us to keep it down, we could barley understand what they were saying. So we did try and keep our voices down, however the other girls did arrive back not long after and must have made some noise coming in, so we had more knocks. We could also hear a group of boys below us coming back from their night out.
The next day we were packing up our stuff when we had the owner come into our room and tell us that we have made such a noise the night before that we were going to be loosing our deposits and paying for the girls next doors night for £45, he carried on to tell us that there was picture frames smashed down stairs, and fire extinguish off the walls which was our fault, and that he has had stag dos and groups of up to 40 women and we have been the worst ones. We ended up having massive arguments with him all morning which led to us being kicked out.
I would not rate this hostel at all! Me and my friends have been away and stayed in hostels many times before and have had extremely lively loud nights and this was not one of them. It felt like they were just trying to get as much money out of us as possible and was very un professional about how he spoke to us.

The hostel was clean and in a good location very useful for a weekend away for a young group. After a night out in Torquay we arrived home later on to many people running up and down the stairs although we was not surprised, as many use hostels for a place to stay after a night out, but we was rudely interrupted in the morning by Shaun telling us we had made to much noise when arriving home. We was shocked as considering it was a group of ten girls in a bedroom there was obviously some noise to be expected (chatting amongst each other before falling asleep- no music played!), although many more was louder downstairs. We was then told we would have to pay for the stay of the people next door as they wasn't happy with the level of noise, we was very angry with this as nowhere was we told this and no way was we to much of a disturbance. The same guests had also complained about others staying but as they believed we was the loudest we was expected to reimburse their stay. We therefore did not want to agree to this decision although we had no choice as our £30 deposit was taken and £5 deposit for rooms keys also. Maybe advertising this as a hostel and taking young and big groups of people is not a good idea if silence is expected after 10pm...................
