We had read the reviews on tripadvisor before we went and it helped us to decide whether to go or not. It was our first spontaneous trip; we booked it two days before we went and glad we did so.
We were greeted by Heather Darwish who owns the hotel, along with her husband, Joe. She was very pleasant to have around, easy to talk to, and gave us advice on good places to go that suited our budget which was additionally helpful. This helped to make our stay far more welcoming.
The rooms are clean, but our room (number 8 on the first floor) had a strange smell on the first night. We stayed for three nights and we only smelt it on the first night. The smell had either gone or we had gotten used to it. The room was otherwise clean and space was average, it wasn't too big or too small. Heather, a joint owner, cleaned our room everyday and made our beds which was a delightful surprise.
We had breakfast each morning which was very tasty. We could have any drink we wanted from tea to milk to orange juice along with cereal, toast and if we wanted, a cooked meal. To my delight, it was all home cooked straight away and always tasted delicious. We also decided to additionally have dinner here for the first two nights and dine out on the final evening and there were two choices for each course. It was all delicious and timed well to our eating suitability.
The location is nice. It's on a main road but it is never too busy. It is about a five minute drive / twenty minute walk to the harbour which has a fabulous scenery. There are also beaches further down if you follow the coast, at Torquay, then Paignton, then Babbacombe, both marvellous. There are many eateries close by, and a Chinese restaurant next door which is useful.
Overall, my stay was quite good and I would like to return next year.
Room Tip: Try to stay on the ground floor as there is no lift.
