“A good deal, but room for improvement”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

We had a very good deal for our one night stopover at Gleneagles. After the very glitzy & comfortable public areas we were very disappointed with our room, even with a sea view. The quilt was grubby, the outdated radiator ticked constantly like a loud clock, & we were told the only way to stop it was to turn it off at the wall! The temperature outside was below freezing.
We could hear both the TV & talking in the next room.
The bathroom was clean & fairly modern, but let down by a large crack right across the sink. The shower was like a trickle.
We did report these things & I understand maintenance is ongoing. However, there are certain standards which you should be able to expect whatever the price, and sadly the Gleneagles fell short in several areas.
The staff are very friendly and do their best, but some serious updating is needed to this hotel.

Room Tip: Check out your room thoroughly before you settle in!

Dear teljan_10,

I am sorry on this occasion that the standard of you accommodation fell short of you expectations. We closed the hotel for 10 days in February for some improvements, this is an ongoing programme of works.

If you wish to discuss you concerns in greater detail, I would be happy to hear your suggestions.

Regards,

James

“A very last minute booking - perfect for a cheap one night stop over”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

Actually booked the room 2 hours before we arrived through an external website as we wanted a night away from home. When we first arrived at reception they seemed confused as they had not recieved the confirmation from the booking website BUT they trusted my email and quickly sorted us with a room.

The actual hotel and its reception/lobby areas is lovely, very nicely decorated in a modern style with a clever use of mirrors to enhance the environment. Our room was on the first floor and was named 'Sunrise' (No.37). Very small room but was ideal for what we wanted. Bed was ok with clean duvet and sheets, with medium sized freeview tv and bath with overhead shower. Balcony looking over car park (£10 additional for sea view).

Only downside to this hotel was the distance from the town centre; it would have been an extremely long walk but only took 5 minutes by car, and I'm sure a taxi wouldn't be too expensive. Also, free wi-fi internet was not working.

For £30 room only, we thought this was great value and it really was a superb hotel considering the circumstances; but due to room size and location, we would not stay there more than a weekend.

Oh and very creaky floorboards!!

Dear swhitehead,

Thank you for your honest review. It can sometimes take several hours for the correspondence to come through to a hotel on fax/email from a 3rd part website. It is always reassuring to see that many guests still choose to write detail and accurate reviews to share with other travellers. We hope we can accommodate you for another weekend break in the future.

Regards,

James

“Good Value”

Just been this hotel for 6days, overall is good. Sunday lunch only £14.95 and the view in conservatory Restaurant is very fantastic, 1.25 mile to town centre and pretty hills around. But have something weird, something banging2 occasionally, when I see the next door is another room, ah probably they just refurbish

“Good value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

Having read the reviews we took advantage of a deal for 2 nights accomodation for £52. Arriving just after noon on 22 January we decided we would try the 3 course lunch for £14.95 in the conservatory. The setting was lovely overlooking the see and we were lucky enough to get the last table. The meal was very nice, served promptly and hot, we could understand why it has won awards. The public areas are very well presented and our room had a balcony and see view. If there was a critisism it would be that the room was a tad small, but as we were 'out and about' this was not an issue for us. Decided to have breakfast the following morning, which again was very good. All the staff were very pleasant and helpful and I would recommend this hotel.

“Certainly not Fawlty Towers!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

As we live locally we know that, some decades ago, this hotel inspired the creation of Fawlty Towers. So, we put it to the test by celebrating a special occassion there just before Christmas. From casual visits we knew the ground floor is very stylish and sophisticated but this was our first opportunity to experience the accomodation. Our room (No. 7) was very clean, well furnished and enjoyed a balcony and wonderful sea view. Although there were Christmas parties and a disco taking place downstairs we were not troubled by too much noise and the disco ended at a reasonable hour.
Our dinner of typical Chistmas Fayre was very enjoyable, stylishly presented and satisfied our appetites. The only disappointment was that an off-menu request for a melon starter couldn't be accomodated (although we weren't sure if our waiter quite understood our request).
A very pleasing piece of customer service was that as we left the Restaurant a female staff member asked us if we would like coffee, but as the hotel was filling up with party guests she could see we were hesitating, so without any prompting she offered to bring it to our room. And true to her word she dleivered it within 10 minutes. (Sorry we didn't get your name, but well done).
A pretty good nights sleep followed (apart from happy noises from an energetic couple in a room down the corridor).
Breakfast was tasty with good portions, just let down by the need to cook your own toast on a machine that isn't up to the job (you know the scene guests mingling round the toaster trying to make sure no one walks off with their slices). Why a Hotel such as this can't deliver toast to the table bewilders me.
So apart from some minor criticisms we had a very enjoyable stay and would recommend the Hotel. (Forgot to say we stayed on a very reasonable winter rate that included three course dinner and coffe at £10 per head) Manuel, Basil and Sybil are certainly NOT alive and well at the Glenagles.
