“Superb service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 May 2010

The staff at the Royal Fleet are first class - they go above and beyond their jobs. The receptionist offered to make us toast for an exceptionally early start - the lady behind the bar made me a delicious hot chocolate before bed. They were willing to hold the room so we could store our bags during the day. Its a traditional hotel - the rooms are spotlessly clean - if a little on the dated side decor wise - but warm and very friendly. I would recommend this hotel and will be staying again. This was my second visit. The cooked breakfast is awesome - unfortunately this trip I wasn't able to sample it again ...

“Excellent value for money.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 March 2010

Stayed on 19 and 20 March 2010 having travelled down from North Wales. Receptionist was brilliant, very pleasant and couldn't do more to help. Bed linen was clean and crisp towels more than adequate and the rooms nice and clean I challenge anyone to find better value for money. Cannot wait to returrn in June for liesure trip.

“More like a hostel than a hotel. So dissapointing.”

We were in Plymouth for our son's passing out parade. 11 of us booked in, aged from 3 to 50's. Our choice was made on recommendations in the Naval Base accommodation book. The reception and bar areas were dirty, smelly and extremely dated. We were lead along a cold tatty corridor to the "family accommodation". There is no lift, the stairways are more like correctional facility access. The bedroom was basic, although the bed was comfy and the linen clean. The furniture was covered in rings from cups, the door handle was hanging off, the door frame was cracked and coming away from the wall. The bathroom was depressing, black stains on the ceiling, black mould stains on the tile grout and silicone, fungus on shower head. We stopped for 2 nights and there was no room service. The beds were neither changed nor made, the bathroom was not cleaned. The staff, although limited, were lovely and kind. My thoughts were that they were embarassed about the standards of this "hotel". The communal loos near the restaurant were filthy. There were half empty beer bottles, toilet paper and urine all over the floor. This was breakfast time. Not somewhere we wanted to let our small grandchildren use. Breakfast was plentiful and dining room bright and cheery. This place needs a serious overhall, more staff, hotel management change. Thankfully I will never need to go back. Very dissapointed, real low point of weekend.

“staff brilliant ,, meals fabulous, rooms humm !!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2009

it has to be said that devonport is not appeeling to the eye on arrival to the hotel

we were greeted by a nice receptionist ,who gave us the key to the locked car park situated around the back of hotel a
also the door key to our room
which was down the side of the hotel one of the whitedoors ,,,
very shabby and run down was our first thought but we went in as you do, bed was ok but hanging wardrobe was terrible no hangers only plaster falling off the walls

i just had to go back to reception not to complain but to be moved to a more up dated and cleaner room the room we had been given was dark, smelt of damp and flithy

it was prob s ok for a one night stay but not two nights reception should have known this i think

the duty manager moved us straight away to a room in the main hotel he then mentioned that the owners had only taken it over from the mod this year and a refurb was in place for next year, please ask for a room in the main hotel at time of booking your stay will be ok also a harbour view

only thing wrong we found was no heating if raidiators are not on they could provide a halogen heater perhaps !!!

breakfast was nice and plentifull also evening meals like a la carte £10 for two courses
crockery a bit chiped and dated and un washed sometimes we found

the radio was piped around all areas of hotel down stairs loud sometimes as they are teen age staff more than mature

bar area and prices reasonable but lack in some TLC like everywere else in the hotel

all the staff do each others jobs no one takes charge as we could see ,,and staff did no clearing up after the party or christening which took place during our stay

you just did not know who was who as at any one point ,the staff did as thay liked no duty manger that day i think he was off i was told

accually it needs more staff to maintain a standard of hygeine and perfection to certain areas as its needed and partys at the hotel take far more priority than the GUESTS !!!!

there is no were within walking distance to go but bus stop at top of the street to plymouth which was enjoyable
and ferry to torpoint with in reach

will return but only after refurb it would make a huge differance to the place and staff oranisation would help

ONE person ONE job

so thats all i can say folks
