Where to start: I stayed at this Hotel last year and had a poor experience in terms of quality of room [threadbare sheets and carpets & poor food] However, having complained I was assured these matters would be addressed and If I choose to stay with them again I would be given an upgrade. So, again having business in Plymouth I thought it must be worth a return visit so told advised the guest relations of the previous. There followed an exchange of emails with an anonymous 'help desk' in the ethernet somewhere, with the operator never actualy reading the content of me emails. Eventually they did get the gist and told me to advise the receptionist on checking of the promise to upgrade me. On check in i did exactly that but surprise he was not authorised to upgrade me but would discuss it with the manager and get back to me... he never did. The room was better than my last visit and the sheets fine but was was obvious was the threadbare carpets that make the room look tired. The view is spectacular of Plymouth seafront from the front of the hotel but some of the concrete window ledge is breaking off, so even the view is detracted from. I did notice an odour in the wardrobe and on closer inspection found a towel hidden on the shelf, not so bad until I opened t and found it was faeces smeared. Obviously the previous occupier has left a gift for some reason but I would have housekeeping would have found it by the smell alone. Breakfast is adequate and nothing more. Tea/coffee is serve yourself from hot flasks but no matter what time you arrive the sausages look as though they were cooked the night before with a firm crust not normally associated with the humble sausage. The only evening meal i tried was the Scampi, which had obviously lived its life in the frying basket as the coating was like a hardened shell designed to protect against nuclear attack. The final nail in the coffin was the toilet packed up on the Friday and there was no one to fix it until Monday [I left Saturday] so a couple of days of filling the bin with water and self flushing was not the most hygenic way of getting ready for an evening out. As it was for business and most of my time was away from the hotel i just put up with the above until on checkout the receptionist asked me how things had gone...I had an hour to spare so I told her the above saga. Her only excuse offered was that actually the hotel was not reall part of a chain but privately owned..... oh, thats okay then. She promised the manager would call/email me and he has not yet and am I expecting him to.... not really. I would suggest adding the word NOT or LOWEST to the name of this hotel, to best describe everything except the view. One final thing is there is a totally negative feel about the hotel that permeates to the staff. This probably starts with the constant bombardment and fixation about parking restrictions for the car park. They start in the carpark, follow you to reception then in the lift and also in your room, along with all the other warning messages about window opening, smoking, towels etc. It all lends the 'hotel' the air of a small minded seaside B&B & landladt than a corporate quality hotel.
Room Tip: If yuo must stay there choose/be allocated a seaview cell.
