To put it simply, my 2 night stay at the Berkeleys of St James was superb. Having never stayed at a guest house before, I have to admit I was slightly apprehensive. As soon as I stepped into Berkeleys, my fears were put at ease. I was met by Jackie, who showed me to my very well appointed, and spotlessly clean room. The bathroom had nice little touches, such as toiletries and little storage shelves, which are often absent in hotel bathrooms. My room superseded my expectations, and was far more superior to many chain hotels I have stayed at in the past.

In the morning, I was met by Jeff for breakfast, who very proficiently managed everything. Freshly brewed coffee arrived, and there was a plethora of fruits, cereals, yoghurts, fruit juices, etc available. Cooked breakfast was fantastic, using quality ingredients, and far superior to most hotel breakfasts I have had in the past.

The location of the guest house was in a quiet side-street in the Hoe area, and you can purchase daily visitor car parking passes from the guest house, which also work throughout Plymouth – very convenient and a big money saver. Just be sure to follow the instructions on the card and park in the correct spaces, not the ones only for Plymouth residents. Jeff and Jackie have some great tips on places to visit and places to eat. All in all, a wonderful experience.

I was welcomed by Jackie before I even arrived and her husband was very obliging too. Very friendly couple, lovely, comfortable room and fabulous breakfast. Convenient location for the sea front.

“Accommodating accomodation”

Second time we have stayed at Berkeleys with Geoff & Jackie. We travelled with my parents inlaw who are frail and needed a ground floor room. The Berkely had one, it was large with en suite and could have accomodated 3 people. Our room, although not en suite (the 4 others are), had a shower and wash basin with a private w.c. just across the landing. All very comfortable, clean and well decorated with wall mounted LED TVs & tea /coffee facilities. Great full English breakfast also. The location is excellent being only a few minutes walk from the Hoe and a few minutes walk to the city centre. Parking can be a problem in the area but we were fine with parents + disabled card, also the Berkeley has room for limited free parking in their rear yard. Geoff & Jackie are great hosts and always make you feel welcome and were keen to ensure that my inlaws had all they needed. Once again a great stay. We will be back.

“Great Place To Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2008

Spent one night here on our way way round the South West. Our double room was very clean and comfortable with an ensuite bathroom. The property is in a quiet street. The owner was very friendly and helpful. Upon arriving she was able to give us a map and show us where to see the sights. We were able to park our car and walk to the city centre and the "Hoe". Breakfast was great. Make sure to try the bacon. Overall a great place to stay.

“Highly recomended!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 August 2008

I would definitely recommned this B&B, the owners were really friendly and helpful. I stayed in a double room which was very clean and a good size of two people and each room had an en suite which was very convenient!
