“Like a fairytale...Grimm!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 April 2010

We were booked in for 2 nights( a group booking to which I had no input) and stayed for 1, I wish I had trusted my instincts and not bothered ringing the door bell, it was grubby from the front door to our room on the top floor.
Not a very pleasant experience at all, I certainly would not recommend it or stay again.
I actually cant find anything nice to say about the place, apart from the landlady was ok.

When the people arrived the hall way was being refurbished at the time. I bent over backwards to accomadate these people, when they arrived with all their expensive diving equimpent i kindly stored it in my own accomadation. If the guest house is a fairytale grimm as they put it ,then why would they have bothered even to stay for breakfast! And all the other people that had booked with them were very happy with the guest house.

“one of the very poorest guest houses I have stayed in.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2009

The en-suite bedroom was right at the top of the stairs, 3 flights, the shower room smelt of a musty smell, cannot describe the smell, the window wouldnt close properly and the window frames inside was black, hadn't been cleaned in years. There was a fridge in the dining room but the ice box was full of ice, there again we couldn't use it, there wasn't anyone in to see to us except the owners mother who was flustered and didn't know which room we were supposed to be in, at first she gave us a key, for the ensuite then decided we were in the wrong room gave us another key, for a single room. the double bed was two singles zipped together, and the mattress on one was faulty.

when you booked you did not request a room on the lower level, if I had known you required a room on the lower leve I would of accomodated you. As for the ice box in the dining room, the fridge is not for guest use. It is to keep the Breakfast Juice and butters ect in for guest in the mornings at breakfast time. If had known you wishd to store frozen food. I could of put it in the freezer in my kitchen. But you never requested this. As for the room we inherited it that way when we bought the guest house from the previous owners. We have since completely refurbished and transformed the room and the en-suite. As for my mother who was in her late seventies who kindly helped me out when i had to go into hosptail myself , even though she was terminally ill herself with cancer and has since passed away was just trying to help me, so that was why mother checked you in rather then myself .

This was my second time at The Firs, this time with my daughter, 16. Our twin room was clean, the ensuite a good size and the breakfast choice very good. Price reasonable too
