We stayed at the Grosvenor for one night and I'm glad it wasn't any longer than that.
We spent ages deliberating over which hotel to choose given the selection - we thought a lot of hotels and B&B's in Plymouth sounded over priced and The Grosvenor is not cheap for what it is. We were lucky enough to get a parking space in one of the 5 spaces that they have in a shabby car park around the back - it was a bit tight getting in and there is no access from the carpark directly to the hotel, you have to walk around the corner, pass several other hotels and back up on yourself to get back to the main entrance.
To say that it was just the two of us, I have no idea why they decided to put us in a family room - the two single beds in addition to our double bed, just made it awkward to walk around the room. The bedding, although clean and neatly made up, was looking a little worse for wear, when I drew the duvet back from the pillow, I noticed a hole in the pillowcase. The television seemed to have a mind of its own, it even turned itself on at 3am which is not what you want when you're on a holiday.
The en-suite was clean, shower was pleasant enough but the towels were a bit scratchy. There was a little kettle and some coffee, tea and biscuits which was a relief to see after a long journey, but our view from the window was of a flat roof near the car park so make sure you don't get room 3 if you're after a good view.
The breakfast was not a pleasant experience. No one had shown us where to go, there was no one to meet us - after finding the room and the only available table (that had not yet been cleared), it was more than ten minutes before we saw the one poor lady who seemed to be running backwards and forwards for everyone on her own.
The selection of breakfast stuff was not great - cornflakes, juice, tea and coffee and a selection of jams were the only thing on show, and as there weren't any menus on the table, at first we thought they had just run out of other breakfast things. Finally when we were served, we were given a menu - my partner had a full English which took a while to come, but was nice when it finally got there.
The hotel is well located to the town, just a short walk downhill will take you to the theatre and then all of the main shopping areas, A 30 second walk left out of the hotel will take you to the most stunning view of the coast. For that reason I have been more generous with scoring than I would have based on the hotel features alone.
This is a clean hotel, some lovely decor in the public areas, but we weren't impressed with the service here - there was always a group of young women gossiping at the small reception area - had they spent more time helping the breakfast lady out then we might have enjoyed it a bit more. There was no personable service - no one offered to help with bags, no one showed us to our room, and we were given a different price over the phone for the cost of the room than we had to pay - it was an additional £20 which was very annoying given that we weren't happy with the stay. When I mentioned the price, they simply refused to believe that I had been given a different price over the phone and said "it's always costs that much".
If someone spent some time training the staff on improving their customer service skills, and a little extra spent on updating the bedding and towels, this could be an excellent hotel. Until then..we won't be going back.
