“If there was a '3.5 stars' option, then this would define it”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

Stayed here for a night on business, and the New Continental Hotel did a perfectly adequate job. The single room was an OK size and came with the usual conveniences, like TV, kettle and ironing board. I agree with other reviewers who comment that the place is a bit 'tired' looking, though you wouldn't necessarily know that when you see that swanky lobby and bar area.

The gym was not bad - again, a bit tired, and spread across 3 different rooms, which was odd. The pool isn't really worth bothering with, unless you have kids who want to splash around. A 'length' of the pool takes about 4 strokes, and I'm no Michael Phelps...

The two saving graces for this place were the proximity to the town centre and the restaurant (Steve's Brasserie), which not only had great service but also fabulous food which you'd expect to pay more for if it were in a good restaurant. The breakfast was nice enough too, and worth getting if you want to fill your boots and have a lighter lunch.

Paying for the wifi is a bit cheap, and the connection speed was really quite slow - a dial-up dongle would get you similar speeds.

I don't agree with people complaining about noisy rooms - I asked for a quiet room, and got exactly that (on the 5th floor).

Overall, this is a decent enough stop in a decent enough location, and for not a lot of money. Worth a stay if you just need somewhere to do a job.

“Extremely Average”

The rest of the hotel does not match the lobby and bar. Stayed in a number of rooms, most were a little tired. If you stay at the wrong side of the hotel, it can be extremely noisy at night, as it faces down to the main student nightclub area of Plymouth. Breakfast was ok, and the sports facilities are reasonable, if a little tired as well.

Stayed at this hotel for several weeks Mon-Fri on business.

“Good gym, poor room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

I like to stay in hotels with leisure facilities to give me something to do of an evening. This hotel has above average facilities (I look at the types of machines and weight of the free weights rather than how posh or swanky the rooms are).
For some reason I just never clicked with this hotel. I don't know whether it was the narrow corridors filled with too many fire doors, or the fact it was a bit noisy being located on the main road, or I just had a poor room. Breakfast was OK.

“Unless you want to be near the theatre or the pavilions, don't bother..”

Book the holiday inn instead is my advice.
The main areas of the hotel look recently refurbished and are lovely, the rest are a bit grotty. I can't believe nobody else seems to have pointed out how awful the leisure club is - small, cold pool and shabby, grimy changing area. Lots of cracked tiles and years of dirt in corners. We planned to go twice during our stay but I'd rather have a bath in the room. Needs a total refit.

The room was fine - a rabbit warren to get to and not at all suitable for anyone with walking difficulties or buggies in tow. No view at all from the window, just a wall to look at.

All in all, this served our purpose but purely due to it being so close to the pavilions. Not sure I'd recommend it but fine for one night!

Louise Manolakakis, Manager at New Continental Hotel, responded to this review
6 February 2012
Dear Guest,
Thank you for your recent review with regards to your Christmas Lunch here at the New Continental Hotel.
I am sorry that you found the Ballroom to be dated, this it is a regal style type room with high ceilings and traditional features. A new carpet was replaced in 2010 with the whole room being redecorated in October 2011.
I have spoken to our Head Chef in regards to your comments with your meal. All of our food is always freshly prepared and sourced locally. I can confirm that the turkey was cooked that morning, the potatoes were not deep fried and the vegetables were freshly prepared and cooked. All of our Christmas lunches were checked by our Head Chef before being served to each of the tables. When you complained on the day I have been informed that the Manager did not only apologise to you but also offered you a complimentary meal for four with wine in our restaurant Steve's Brasserie at a later date convenient for you. Thank you once again for your review. Regards, Louise Manolakakis - Marketing Manager.
