“One night was more than enough”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2011

We had taken my elderly father down to my son's graduation on the Hoe. Dad is 83 and was given a single room on the first floor facing the road. It was OKish except for an elderly man the shower was in a cupboard with a step of about 18" to get into it, not the best for an elderly infirm man.
Our room was on the top floor - in the attic, some 5 sets of stairs - no lift.
This is a beautiful building in the conservation area of Plymouth, but it needs very serious updating, the owners have been in residence for 9 years and I can't see any major expenditure being used to make the reception rooms and dining room gracious let alone acceptable. The reception desk is unkempt and lounge not very welcoming.
But it was cheap for a very expensive day. So if you are looking for cheap then this is OK, but no parking other than on the street.

Room Tip: Do not bother - go and find the Premier Inn on the other side of the Barbican, it is still in easy r...

“It should have been a pleasant experience but for ....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2011

We (elderly couple in the late 60s) stayed overnight at Riviera on 22 July 2011. Our arrival was warmly received but it turned out to be a great disappointment when we were guided to our room which was located at the attic. To reach the room we had to climb the steep steps as there is no elevator at the hotel. My wife managed to reach the room and did not come down again until breakfast time the following morning. I had to do the tough job of climbing up and down a number of times to fulfill my personal requirements which were unavoidable. We could have stayed at another hotel if only we had known the situation and condition of the hotel.
Nothing spectacular about the hotel, the room and the breakfast.

“Pleasant and very quiet”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 July 2011

The receptionists were kind and helpful. The room was small but it was enough for me. For continental Europeans : don't forget to bring a British plug adapter! The sink was not in the bathroom but next to the bed, which was a bit original. Apart from that, the room was well-equipped and very calm, for a pleasant night.

“Friendly owners, good location, free wifi but ultra-thin walls”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2010

The Riviera Hotel near Plymouth hoe is in a great position as it is only 30 seconds walk to the sea front area. However a few things that I noticed were no extractor fan in the toilet, room doors that require a firm push to close properly (I could only close my main room door by leaning against it and shoving hard) and single glazed windows (which made the room a bit chilly in the morning).
These details are minor to be honest, but one of my main issues with any accomodation is wall thickness and here they are really thin - I could easily hear the conversation of the people next door. It was so clear that it almost felt like they were sat on the end of my bed. Obviously this also meant at night I could hear them snoring, walking around and also using the bathroom - and they were not being loud themselves, it was the ultra thin walls of the room. I think the room I was in was once part of a bigger room that has been divided with thin boarding or something similar, which is why the sound travels so easily.

The room itself did its job but is in clear need of an update. At least it was clean and the free wifi was great, as was the freeview tv.
The owners were super nice but for roughly an extra £10 you could go close by (across the road in this case) and have somewhere that feels much more modern, fresh, updated and with no thin wall problems. The Riviera Hotel was by no means a bad place, but there are nicer, more efficient places within a minutes walk that do a better job for almost exactly the same price. I just personally cannot handle hearing everything that next door is doing, especially when they are all snoring away while I'm reading before trying to sleep.

I would recommend this hotel if you don't mind/care about easily hearing what the people in the room next door are saying or doing. If you can deal with that then this hotel will probably be fine for you.

Pros:

*Location - very close to sea front & town center

*Free wifi

Cons:

*Very thin walls in my room

*No extractor fan in the toilet

*My room looks like it hasn't been refurbished in years (not a big deal as such)

*No double glazing made it quite chilly in the morning
