“Landlady accused us of stealing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2010

This B&B is clean enough with the traditional decor you would expect from a basic B&B. Clean rooms, TV, towels (very small hand towels and nothing else) having bought our own linen this was not a problem although at 70 pounds a night it would be nice to have every thing you need. We were both quite pleased with our stay up until leaving in the morning. We literally walked out the door put our bags in the car and pulled out the car park when the landlady chased us down the road shouting, once we had stopped and she had caught up she proceeded to lean into the car screeching at us that we had stolen her towels and demands them back now. The fact is, we were never given towels and being accused of stealing when me or my partner have never stolen anything in our lives has left a nasty taste in our mouths as you can imagine. Im sure there are plenty of other B&Bs in this area with more welcoming staff.

Both owners and guests are not always perfect and do make mistakes. No one accused you of stealing but we were aware of missing towels that should have been in the room.

If the facilities were not as you thought they ought to be you only had to ask, and the error would have been immediately adressed, apology given and no embarrasment on either side.

When we stay in other establishments and find things not quite as we expected then we always ask.

Its always better to sort these matters out at the time. It would appear from your other scores that your visit was otherwise highly satisfactory.

“Nice bed and breakfast”

We booked the entire b&b over the new year and stayed for a total of 3 nights. The rooms were very clean on entry and cleaned/tidied daily. No problems with the owners. They were friendly and made us very nice sandwiches every day for a reasonable fee. This was good because it was one less thing to worry about in preparation for our long walks. The heating was kept at the usual times and no issues with hot water.

“We had a marvellous stay in a charming atmosphere”

I stayed here for 9 nights with my wife and two little children. Sally and John are very nice people that made us very welcome. We had a marvellous big room that was perfectly cleaned every day which I must say is not always common in english b & bs. Johns marvellous breakfast is a rich and perfect start in the day. We always had everything we needed including a friendly chat when we wanted to, hot shower water , the heating was alwas on. I must say this for me is the Ideal place to stay in Lynton. even for much more money I cant image a better service.
I can in no respect understand why other people wrote bad remarks about this place. None of the critics written here cold I pesonally find there.
Go to the denes and enjoy your holiday for ony a small amount of money

I am surprised at some of the negative reviews about The Denes. I trust TA but it isn't monitored and reviews are not necessarily true. As the owner stated she has no record of some of the unhappy guests and those reviews are at odds with other people's and my experiences.

Stayed here in January on a very quick visit cycling on Exmoor. Loved it. How could anyone be disappointed? Lynton is virtually closed in January and only 1 restaurant open. Most other B & Bs closed too. Very happy to have stayed with Sally and John. Rooms very big. Lots of hot water, in fact I had an electric shower in my room so how can it run out??? Lots of help given about where to eat (in the only open pub admittedly!!!) plus offers to tumble dry our clothes, for free. Offers to leave our car there for the day after check out.

Sally put us in separate rooms at no extra cost as she had space.
Breakfast was excellent and yes there are some fairly specialised books on Science. A level and higher!!

One word of caution about Lynton tourist office. Having researched and short-listed a few B & Bs, we were going to call a few on arrival. No mobile phone reception at all in the village so when we saw the tourist office we went in to ask for assistance. They immediately offered to book us one, went ahead and THEN asked us for 10% of the fee which poor old Sally has to deduct from our bill. If you have already done your research then avoid this scam. Just call direct you can get reception in the churchyard!!!

If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to contact me through Tripadvisor.

“Rude and strange owners”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2009

My girlfriend noticed this site and came across the Denes, where we stayed a few years back. After reading the other reviews I felt compelled to add my two bits.

I have a feeling that the owners dislike young people, as there was an older couple staying as well who they were (somewhat) polite to. With us we may as well have been mud. The husband hardly said a work and when we sent back our bacon one morning because it look old (and I mean grey!) I overheard the wife insulting us.

On various occasions whe they thought we couldn't hear I overheard the wife making contemptous remarks about us. We almost left without paying, which i would advise people do if they get the same Fawlty-ish treatment from these people.

Don't go near it if you want to relax, or even be respected!! I submit that the couple of positive reviews are actually written by the owners!

  • Liked — The beds were okay
  • Disliked — The very rude owners. Bad food. Couldn't sleep from the streetlight

It is difficult for us to respond to these comments as the alleged stay was over two and a half years ago. However we do not believe these people stayed with us in June 2006 for the following reasons: 1) we have not found a couple from Wales that stayed more than one night in June 2006, 2) nobody in nine years has ever sent a breakfast back and 3) only one room could possibly be affected by street lighting and that has only become apparent in 2008 following a change in the curtains. Furthermore they could not have stayed in that room as we know personally all those that stayed in that room in 2006 and the majority have returned , some on several occasions since 2006.

In June we would be consuming between 10lb-15lb of bacon per week, so it would hardly have time to hang about getting old. We purchase our bacon from a local butcher, who obtains his products from the surrounding area; it probably has a lower sodium nitrite concentration which is healthier to eat but will produce a less pink more variable colour in the rasher. We cook our food to our guests tastes so we only need to know how you would like it cooked - we aim to please.

It is a fact of life complaining from the comfort of ones homes is easier, rather than bringing the issues directly to the attention of the managers or owners - hence the relatively high proportion of complainers. We genuinely believe this ‘guest’ has re-invented their profile and has already complained twice before and have picked up other comments from other posts to make their post appear different to those they have posted previously.
