We stayed here in march 2011 for 2 nights We were greated by a friendly owner and she directed us to the room. It was dusty and had cob webs but this is a old place so it's part of the charm!! The bathroom was fine. We visited the pub next door the ale was fine but like others found it very overpriced on the food side. (we ate in lynton the next day some fine pubs in the town) Breakfast on the 2 mornings was fine. Now for some minus points for some. This is a country area so dogs are welcombe so you may have a dog with you whilst eating. The central heating went off during the night and we got very cold.On the saturday night we had the local lads leaving the pub untill 1.30am in thier subaru cars so we did n't get much sleep. As stated this is a hotel attached to a local pub so expect to share it with the friendly locals!!

Room Tip: All rooms are the same so no real tips

“October 2011 stay”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 November 2011

The room was fine with nice furnishings. we were greeted by the owner?/manager? and guided to our room. Very little talk and not very welcoming! Hard work in fact! Really think she was in the wrong job... you need personality and warmth to make a success of a hospitality role.
We spent the evening in the Beggars roost pub next door which is owned by the hotel proprietors. My Husband had 2 drinks all night, a pint of local ale and a pint of san miquel lager. It was flat and vile! He had to leave them. I had a nice meal which was cod and chips however, my husband had a truly disgraceful beef madras curry £11.95!!!! very small portion and suspiciously out of a tin... possibly Asda's own brand. Needless to say, we will give that hotel a wide berth in future. Still stinging from the extortionate price of the curry/gravy and rice! INice hotel spoilt by zero personality manager and expensive crap food and beer!

Room Tip: Room 6 nice

“NOT for US”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2011

We have just had a night at the Exmoor and went on Trip Advisor comments. So wrong...Our room was No 3, it was dirty and smelt funny, the sink in the bathroom was cracked, the window was filthy and looked out over weeds and a complete mess. The bed was up against a wall with just one bedside table. Behind the bed it was filthy with dust and debris. The carpet was bitty like it had not been hoovered and the pictures had dust on them visible without even touching. The lock on the door was a nightmare to open and we felt let down. The wardrobe and dressing table were very old and chipped. At 70.00 I expect more these days.
When we arrived we were met by a lovely lady whose partner runs it, she was welcoming but said nothing about the state of the room. On leaving the room to go out for dinner we saw to our horror a mouldy ceiling in the hall with a mushroom sprouting from it.
We ate in Lynton and this was good and on our return we popped in to the Beggars pub which is next door to the manor.. This was cosy and welcomong and the food looked good.
We stay away a lot and B and B's can be great this sadly was not the case. I read on here other people have had better rooms, but I won't go back.

“Cosy, welcoming & extremely good value for money with a delightful room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 June 2011

We stayed here in May 2011 for just a night. Our room was delightful, decorated in Laura Ashley throughout with an enormous shower and very comfortable bed. The Beggar's Roost Pub/Restaurant next door (run by the owners) was just what the doctor ordered after a day touring the beautiful surrounding countryside and coast. The welcome was very warm and the atmosphere was one of the friendliest pub atmospheres we have encountered for many a year. We spent the evening chatting to everyone there and enjoyed a very pleasant meal. We are normally real "foodies" so quite picky. The food was pretty simple but well cooked and nicely presented. My husband had crab cakes with a chilli dip followed by a steak and chips (as I said the menu was quite simple) which he enjoyed and I ate a goats cheese salad (which was enormous) followed by a stilton burger and salad which was quite acceptable. Our room price included breakfasts and at £50 per night I think they are undercharging! The breakfast was good and served in an efficient manner. As others have reported, the place is dog friendly - which is fine for us as we love 'em but might not please others. I got the idea it was a popular place for walkers and outdoor sports enthusiasts to stay and for them I believe it is ideal. You need to avoid this establishment if you expect "posh" but we much prefer the warm welcome, fabulous atmosphere and extremely good value for money.
