“Weekend break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 December 2011

This was our second visit to this hotel. Beautiful old building full of character. Yes the decor could be updated but wouldn't want it to lose it's olde worlde charm. It's an old building - you'll always have some maintenance problems. Took a long time to get hot water in bath - but eventually had a hot bath. Had a standard room with sea view. Small flatscreen TV, tea/coffee & hairdrier. You can't see much from the windows because of all the trees but the room was warm and quiet. We were booked in for breakfast and evening meal. Waiters & waitresses were excellent and the food was brought to the table quickly and efficiently. Plenty of choice. Tea and coffee could be taken into the lounge after the meal. Plenty of daily papers to read in lounge. Our trip was with Shearings and we had free drinks in the evening. Absolute value for money.

“TLC Required-urgently”

Very old hotel that is crying out for renovation. Needs better signage-we drove straight past and ended up having to reverse up a rather steep and narrow lane. Right from the off, we should have realised what to expect as only one side of the double doors at the entrance was in operation. Hotel foyer cold and dark. The rest of the hotel is likewise-including the corridors and communal areas. Infact, it is probably the coldest hotel that we have stayed in. Radiators were old and only luke warm-even though this was the end of November and the majority of our fellow guests were elderly. Unable to use the "games room" as it was too cold in there.Cardigans were required at all times-even in the restaurant. We were seated in a corner and had draughts from the windows. Evidence of mould and damp in the "information area" where the lift was located, plus signs of badly repaired/unattractive carpets-carpet tape in abundance. We paid an extra £100 for a room upgrade and were quite taken aback when we located our room as there was paint peeling off the door-not at all inviting. However, we were pleasently suprised once inside the room as it was nice and spacious, with modern furnishings. Nevertheless, the lighting was inadequate and the bed, which was described as "luxurious", was spoilt by the mattress, which was old and lumpy. The shrubs in the hotel garden appeared unkept. If they had been cut back a little, the views over the bay would have been enhanced and more light would have been able to penetrate the building. On a plus side-the staff were friendly and the evening entertainment jolly.

“Disappointing”

We had upraded to a Premium Room expecting a sea view ( previously booked). Sadly only the car park. Room itself OK but very noisy due to an extractor fan from the kitchen.Service mediocre:reception staff unhelpfull. Food as you would expect from Shearings - acceptable.
Would not visit again

Room Tip: Noisy rooms near sea . Premium rooms are not necessarily sea view - check. Very little car parking

“A lovely old Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2011

4 nights at The VALLEY OF THE ROCKS HOTEL AT LYNTON DEVON with my sister.
LOCATION Beautiful overlooking Lynmouth.
BEDROOM Spacious, warm, 2 chairs and 2 comfortable beds.
BATHROOM Spacious with a bath and powerful shower. Water nice and hot. Complimentary small bar of soap. No shampoo or Shower Gel so take your own
TV Small and old but the picture was very good.
SEA VIEW We paid an extra £44 for a sea view and felt this was excessive as we had to go right up to the window and look over to the right to see it !
This lovely Hotel is very old and the room is unfortunately showing a lot of wear and tear. It desperately needs a Handyman to spend some time filling holes etc etc.... The broken bath panel needs replacing. Important areas like the bath, loo and sink were clean but the rest of the room was very grubby.
MEALS BREAKFAST was ok with a choice of cereals, juice, prunes and grapefruit. Tea or coffee plus toast and a small Full English Breakfast. SOUP at dinner time was really lovely. The MAIN COURSE was let down by the vegetables which were usually tasteless and cold. PUDDINGS varied between great and not so good.
STAFF We were very lucky to be served at meal times by Laurenzia who was always cheerful.
A walk through The Valley Of The Rocks is not to be missed. The cliff path especially has stunning views. The Cliff Railway was closed so we walked down to Lynmouth. It was a steep climb back up but worth it as Lynmouth and Lynton are really beautiful.
