A chance conversation of a friend of a friend alerted us that Duncan Walker was back cooking in Devon. Having really enjoyed Duncan's food at his previous restaurant, we were disappointed when he sold up to go travelling. But now he is back doing what he enjoys, on the edge of Dartmoor.
The Old Inn is a restaurant with rooms. Duncan, and his partner Anthea, aim to spoil you, and from the freshly cooked cakes on the tea tray in front of a log fire, on arrival, to the freshly brewed tea tray delivered to your bedroom in the morning, they succeed. The rooms are very comfortable, with en-suite facilities. We slept very well in the comfortable bed.
The Restaurant offers fine dining in a comfortably unpretentious cottage environment. A blazing log fire again, with uncrowded tables, and well judged frequently changing menus. During our visit, Anthea and Duncan, whilst out walking, had managed to find some wild Autumn Chantarrelle, which were incorporated into his Sea Bass dish that evening. The wine list offers a good variety to match your food choices, without making your eyes water.
I have tasted Duncan's cooking over a number of years in different places, and it has frequently exceeded the quality I have had in Michelin starred establishments. I do not know if the Good Food Guide have visited The Old Inn yet, but my guess is that it will not bee too long before there is a high scoring recommendation.
We had a fabulous couple of days, being spoiled, with good walks on the doorstep; our wet muddy dog was also welcomed without fuss, and I think had as good a time as us.
We will be back....just have to earn a few more brownie points with Granny to look after the children again!
