“Fantastic food and wonderful service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2011

Had my birthday meal here last week with friends. We had eaten at the Duncan ( the chef and proprietor's ) previous resturant in Chagford. However, this has taken his cooking to a new level. The food is much more refined and I am really surprised it that he does not have a Michelin star. We have eaten in lots of starred places where the food, ingredients, presentation and service were no where near as good as this.
I need to say how good service is. We were staying in the rooms above the restaurant. When we arrived we were met with tean and cake. Service during the meal was exceptional. Our friends who were also staying the night , had tea and freshly made croissant in bed before breakfast. We then had a super breakfast.
The rooms are comfortable, clean and quiet ( great shower and Molten Brown toiletries ). Please go this place.......you wont be disappointed.

“What a find! But Sshhh... don't tell anyone!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

WOW! We stumbled upon the Old Inn on a wet and rainy late August evening. Immediately we were greeted at the door by Anthea and seated in front of the roaring fire with a pint of ale each. Their two lovely labradors and cat make for adorable evening companions, as we waited for our dinner which we picked from the 3 or so fresh items available that evening. To say we were blown away by the food is an understatement. We hadn't heard of Duncan's legendry cooking prior to our visit but we thoroughly enjoyed our rabbit starter and lamb main. One of the best meals we've ever had! The wine was so good that I've since bought a case of it to enjoy at home (although it's not quite the same without the amazing food served at the Old Inn!). The setting is informal and comfortable - exactly what you want after a hike on Dartmoor or a long drive to get there. We can't wait to go back, just hope it hasn't changed too much! Anthea and Duncan have done a great job providing fresh, beautifully crafted local produce and sharing their beautiful home and we wish them every success for the future. And by the way - whoever wrote the 1 star review is clearly barking mad!!! Alex and Lucy :-)

“Perfection just got better”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2011

22 Mill St was my favourite place on earth - perfectly executed Michelin star cooking minus the ponce. My mission was to visit every time I was down from London visiting family in Exeter. So I was pretty inconsolable a few years ago when Duncan sold up and vanished in a puff of motorbike exhaust. Expectation was equally high yesterday as we rocked up at the Old Inn having heard on the grapevine that Duncan had Returned.

Cooking: still perfect. Location: even better. The Old Inn with its two smaller dining rooms has an even more homely, domestic feel than No 22, and the views from the sitting room across the village green to the church and from the bedrooms across the edge of Dartmoor were wonderful.

Both restaurant and B&B are remarkable value and I cannot recommend the Old Inn enough to anyone who appreciates fine cooking in an unpretentious, relaxed setting.

Thank you to Duncan and Anthea for an amazing stay - look forward to seeing you again soon.

“Superb food, great environment and charming hosts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2011

This review is for the restaurant at the Old Inn and not the lodgings.

My wife and I enjoyed a superb meal at the Old Inn after seeing Jay Rayner's review in The Observer. We were not disappointed.

A charming environment and wonderful service made for a really special evening.

Our thanks to Duncan, Charlotte as well as Teign & Tyne!

“Exceptional”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 June 2011

Pampered from the moment of our arrival, we stayed two nights in a lovely room. The breakfast might have been mistaken for the evening's haute cuisine. Dinner was truly astounding. We chose different dishes at each course and sampled each other's. Everything was perfect.

Friendly and entertaining informality combined with comfort and the aforementioned pampering made this an ideal stay in a beautiful location. We will be back!
