Old GWR hotel so a bit mature and quirky but we loved it. Right outside the St Davids railway station and lots of real ales! 10 mins walk to centre of Exeter and you have to pass a great big Wetherspoons en route. What more would you want for a weekend with the boys?

Hotel is just steps from St. Davids Train Station. There was a computer glitch with our reservation, but the staff made arrangements for us in a new modernized section under construction. Breakfast was good; staff was very hard working and nice.

Arrived to find the building covered in scaffolding (which we were not advised about when booking). Building works throughout the hallways on the way up to the room (very dangerous with small children in tow.) The room itself was dirty (found a used cigarette and lighter on windowsill) There were exposed carpet tacs where the carpet did not reach the wall, the bathroom ceiling was completly covered in mold and large cracks in the ceiling above the beds and sharp broken tiles in the bathroom so we were unable to allow the children to use it unsupervised. There was a distasteful smell throughout the building and was kept awake two nights in a row due to various alarms going off throughout the night! I am completly appalled with the standard of this hotel and having backpacked around the world I can honestly say this is the worst building i have ever stayed in and cannot believe that a building in this state is allowed to be open to the public! (prices were not even cheap, only £10 less then surrounding hotels which were unfortunatly fully booked due to the Devon show otherwise we would most definatly have found somewhere else to stay!) The only positive side was the breakfast was decent and the receptionist and restaurant staff were friendly.

Shabby, poorly lit and smelly room (someone had been smoking); broken non-functioning bath tap; over-the-bath shower good but no shower curtain; small, extremely uncomfortable double bed resulted in two sleep-broken nights in a rather small room. On return from a day out we found the bedroom door had been left open by the cleaners. Bathroom door wouldn't close. Absence of free parking was a problem. Cooked breakfast was okay but not brilliant. New flat-screen television but old television and other missing fixtures had not been made good. The whole hotel is in urgent need of defumigation and redecoration.
