“Good hotel for the price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

My second visit to this hotel and I had no hesitation in returning.
Positives:
- Great central location
- Comfortable room
- Friendly staff

Negatives
- Part of the hotel's charm is being an old building, but as a result expect the associated quirks that you wouldn't get in a purpose built modern building e.g. sloping floors and old lifts.

Worth noting that if you don't want to pay hotel prices for breakfast there are plenty of coffee shops nearby that are open early, including some with Cathedral views.

“Good city hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

We stayed here in January for a quick one-night break for our wedding anniversary. The room was lovely, double-ended bath looking out over the cathedral; and I liked the open-plan design, with the bathroom flowing straight into the bedroom. We booked an 'Enviable' room, the 2nd highest grade of room, and I have to say I wouldn't have wanted to stay in a smaller one. It wasn't too small but it wasn't spacious exactly, either. But the bed was enormous and glorious.

I did email the hotel the weekend before we wanted to stay to enquire about rooms and no one replied to it. In the end I booked online. After that blip however the staff were absolutely excellent, incredibly accommodating and helpful, smiling and personable. We didn't eat there but we had a drink in the champagne bar which was nice if a bit quiet.

Overall this is a very pleasant hotel, great location with charming staff.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the cathedral are lovely.

“boutique hotel in centre of town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2011

you really can't beat the location of this hotel right in the centre of exeter. it's worth checking the website for last minute deals as we got and exceptionally good room rate over Christmas.

the room we booked was very noisy on the first night as it was directly above a karaoke night at the local pub- worth saying on reservation that you don't want rooms on pub side of hotel. after asking to change rooms we were given a beautiful room and an upgrade on the second night of our stay. the hotel staff were very understanding of the noise problem and changed the room happily.

in general all staff we met at the hotel were exceedingly friendly and very helpful. the room we moved to was spacious and very well presented and had an incredible view of the cathedral. the beds are huge and very good quality- although very soft.

breakfast- full- is very worth booking and delicious and with a huge variety of cooked options.

all in all this is a great city hotel which we would definitely book for future trips to the city.

“Wonderful Experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2011

I stayed here while on a business trip to Devon and we were thoroughly spoilt at the Royal Clarence. This hotel has lots of quirky features that make the overall experience a memorable one. I particularly enjoyed the lift as well as the sloping floor in the room. Excellent location and beautiful views over the Cathedral yard. Staff were professional and I would definitely recommend this hotel for those looking for comfortable stay.

“Fairly Happy Persons Deal”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 December 2011

The hotel is nicely positioned right in the centre of Exeter next to the Cathedral and easy access to most shopping areas. Suggest you arrive in Exeter in daylight and don't just rely on Sat Nav to find the nearest car park or entrance to Cathedral yard.
The hotel is old but with modern decor. The welcome was good and my Mothers bag was carried to our room.
The room was a nice sized spacious room with twin beds next to each other. Nice subtle lighting and good sized mirror in wardrobe and magnified one was great in the bathroom. no bath, which is sometimes nice but a nice big walk and powerful shower. Lovely toiletries.
Nice shoice of tea, coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits. There was room service available but not sure of a charge for this.
The Happy Persons Deal included the room, a two course meal from a weekly set menu (a little limited) and breakfast (£129 per night per room). We had to ear our evening meal in the Cafe/bistro, which was good food BUT the alcoholic drinks were very expensive and an additional 12% added as a service charge e.g £9 for a bottle of beer. Some of the staff were a little slow in taking orders but it was busy with Christmas parties. The Manager was very informative and made a greater effort with us.
Back in the room we could have done with some instructions for the air conditioning, which was noisy and on and off throughout the night. We also had music below until 11.30 with Christmas functions I guess.
A great choice of cooked Breakfast dishes and/or continental plus juices, lovely fresh fruit, cereals, yoghurt, porridge with maple syrup and pastries. The service was excellent as it was the main restaurant. This made the deal worth it.
The food looked great and reasonable in the Tavern next to the hotel. We went there for an after dinner Cappachino and a drink. Found our options limited as the Ship was not for us with Karaoke that night too.
When you pay the bill do check the itemised bill that you have to sign. On arriving home I realised we were over priced by £15. I rang the hotel and they apologised for this.

Room Tip: Heard via reviews that rooms in the front can be noisy?
