“Cold Restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

We had a 2 night stay in February 2012 and all was fine except for the very cold restaurant. This has been refurbished in the last 18 months/2 years and it has been done without Thistle putting in any heating. We ate in the restaurant both nights of our stay and the waiter put on 2 fan heaters and we sat by one of them. Each night there was only one other table eating there - not a surprise really as it was so cold.

The other problem with the hotel is lack of parking and having to pay for it if lucky enough to get a space outside.

This is our third stay here and will probably stay there again but will think twice about eating in the restaurant in the winter!

“A decent place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

We got a good deal from lastminute.com, and were allocated a (disabled) standard double room (114 I think). As it was a disabled room it may have been roomier than others, and the bathroom had no bath just a massive walk in shower with a disabled seat. That made us laugh a bit because it wasn't very romantic, felt more like being in hospital with the panic chords etc, however it was beautifully clean and the bed was large, comfortable, spotless. It does feel like a great business hotel in that it doesn't have much character in the rooms, although the shared spaces in lobby are very attractive and welcoming. We had two niggles - one was that there was a wedding on and our room was outside the lift. Until 2 am drunken guests kept piling out of the lift and making a racket (not the hotel's fault, but still a shame as we had left our two young kids at grandmas with the dream of getting a wondeful night's sleep). The other was that at breakfast, the hot buffet came a bit in dribs and drabs and wasn't replenished very fast. There seemed to be a slight lack of management at breakfast - the staff all worked very hard it just needed a bit more organisation. The food was nice when it came though and full choice was on offer (we heard other guests complaining to the management that there had been no breakfast available when they were there, but as they were there the same time as us I am not sure they were being entirely truthful). We didn't eat there in the evening as Exeter has so many nice restaurants. All in all, a nice place to stay and very close to everything. A little tip: buy breakfast tokens the night before for £10 as if you buy it on the day it is £16 and it isn't worth that!

“Nice room, attentive staff, good stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

The room size was ok, I agree with the comment by another reviewer of the noisy students.

The staff around the hotel were friendly and attentive. The reception staff were great and the food during the 4 night stay was brilliant. The car park is quite small and the bar prices were quite steep but all in all a great hotel in a great location for Exeter city centre, would certainly visit again if I was in the area.

Maybe not perfect for a family stay but for business well worth the stop!

Room Tip: Do ask for a good room away from the a/c and away from the front where the students are at night!

“The £30 per night additional charge needs to be removed or discussed in advance!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

My partner and I stayed at this hotel for the weekend, as part of the 'Winter breaks' promotion. Overall we were very pleased. The package was well worth the money. The food was exquisite, our room was lovely and the staff were wonderful. Particularly Julia Beilista, who really is a credit to the hotel.

The only negative aspect which I am still rather annoyed about is the £60 that the hotel still owes me.
I had paid in advance for the room and so I wasnt expecting to have to pay for anything further except for the £8 per day car park charge.

However, we were told at the desk that we would need to provide card details for room service charges 'should we require them'. They told us that a fee of £30 per night would be pre-authorised for this, but 'don't worry madam, we won't actually take any money from your account'. They did. This was last Friday. Its now Tuesday and Im still £60 out of pocket because its being 'held' by the hotel. I don't care whether they say its in a holding account or not (or they 'have their hands on it' as I was told on checking out). The fact remains, there is £60 of my own money that I cannot access, therefore, they DO take it. Its unecessary. Do they really not trust people to pay their bills? My bank have assured me that it will be returned to my account sometime this week. Ridiculous.

“Too many faults to be 4 star. Don't get married there!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

I was the father of the bride and the wedding was in the hotel. I had specifically asked for a really nice room for my wife and I and this we were given. However, it was on the 5th floor up some very narrow stairs. Also the safe was broken. There was a kettle, but only 2 of each beverage so when we had drunk our cup of tea upon arrival, we had to seek out a maid to get further supplies. There was no bathmat so we had to use a face towel on the floor. The bed was very comfortable and plenty of hot water for the shower. We went to the bar for 2 glasses of house wine and were charged £15.00. Rather excessive we thought.
The honeymoon suite is just above the disco/ballroom so my daughter got no rest when she went to bed on the night before her wedding. She had to phone reception ant 11.30 pm and was eventually given a very small room for the night. She had asked for a bathrobe so that she could go to the other room, but after 30 minutes without one arriving, had to get dressed to transfer. We had thought that at the very least the hotel should have provided some fruit and a bottle of water in her room (perhaps even a small bottle of champagne), but there was nothing there. There wasn't even a safe in which to put her jewellery that she intended to wear for the marriage ceremony.
Breakfast was dreadful on both the days that we stayed. On the first morning the hot food was very cool and the coffee was weak, and on the second morning they ran out of all food and there was a long queue waiting for more to arrive from the kitchen. There was no dining room manager to supervise and the waiters were left to fend for themselves.
The good things. The decor of the hotel and the food and service at the wedding breakfast.

If this was a 2 star hotel I could overlook some of the faults and would give it a 4* rating. But it is a 4* hotel and these faults are not acceptable. Clearly the fault lies with the management as the staff were generally friendly and as helpful as they could be.

One final thing, we thought that the lady who performed the wedding ceremony was very scruffy. She looked like she might have just come back from a trip at Tesco.

If you are thinking of having your wedding there, do think again.

Room Tip: Make sure that your room is not above the disco/ballroom. Try for one on the 3rd floor as the lift...
