“Disappointed”

Popped in for a drink and meal whilst out & about on Dartmoor, hoping for a 'traditional' pub. What a disappointment. The bar looks like it's come from an 80's wine bar & the dining areas look like canteens. No atmosphere at all, and they had Radio 2 playing instead of Cds - and much as I love Radio 2, it's pretty dire on a Sunday afternoon .... The food was also really disappointing; overpriced, straight out of packets, via the microwave. Toilet also drab & a bit grubby. Such a shame, as it's a perfect location, and the owners were friendly and enthusiastic. Won't be going back.

“Pleasant Evening but Please get the waitress to smile!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2011

I'll be brutally honest and start by saying we only went here for dinner on a miserable Saturday November night because we had purchased a deal for the pub on Discount website Groupon. As we had to make a 60ish mile roundtrip to get there I was hoping and praying it was going to be worth it, and I'm pleased to report it was. I am a huge fan of Dartmoor anyway and have been trying to visit as many pubs there as possible in the 2 years I've been residing in Devon but had always overlooked this one. Not anymore. From the outside it is a fairly unassuming looking place but you enter into a small cosy modernised bar area where there were 3 real ales on tap, a local cider, lagers and a good wine selection available. We ordered drinks and were then shown to the lounge where we could peruse the menu before our order was taken. The menu is what I would describe as a proper pub menu. Nothing fancy but a good selection at very good prices. Our order was taken and only when the starters were ready were we shown to our table which I thought was a nice touch that you don't get often now. Had some lovely Kiln roasted salmon and Camembert bites to start followed by Steak and a Pork and Pepper casserole and washed down with Apple pie and Treacle tart( there was 2 of us by the way!). All the food was well cooked, hot and came in very large portions. My only gripe of a very pleasant evening was the (eastern european I think) Waitress who hadn't really grasped how to smile. It would be unfair to say she was deliberately rude but a little training in Customer Service would be a good thing as with my starter and dessert she had whipped my plate away while I was still chewing the last mouthful! I won't let this affect my judgement of the Forest Inn though which overall I found to be very friendly and welcoming and certainly worthy of repeat visits.

“Mixed feelings, but food experience good”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 November 2011

Visited for lunch. Decor leaves much to be the desires, and the doors and door handles were filthy. However, their card does state "Muddy paws, boots and hooves welcome!", so it's no surprise that things are a bit rough. The loos especially, were rather institutional and flimsy. We had a mushroom and goats' cheese starter, and platter of roasted and smoked salmon. Both came with salad. Good dressing. Pork and green pepper casserole was godd, but too much pepper, so it tasted a bit like ratatouille, and lacked seasoning. My "Hunters Chicken" with chips and salad was tasty. Both portions generous, and they gladly swapped my husband's potatoes for chips, which were excellent. Winter berry cheesecake was baked, and quite good, but the dessert selection was small. Also - no fish on main menu, which i would have liked. E. European staff were attentive, but the landlady (I presume) walked through the restaurant talking loudly on the 'phone to a friend/relative. Good variety of local well-kept beers - my husband told me to say this. No character to the place really. Also - the local radio station was on speakers throughout, which I found a bit like a doctor's waiting room (in fact, the ambience is much the same), so I would turn that off, or get some better piped music. We didn't stay, so can't comment on the accommodation. We would go back - the food was good.

“Forested Inn!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2011

We happened to find this place by accident on our way to Princetown. On checking in we loved the warm, friendly atmosphere, selection of local brewed beers, hospitality, and kindness to put us up without an advanced booking. We immediately had a pint then a walk in the surrounding scrub. We returned for dinner which was a treat. Lovely, fresh vegetables, served with lamb, and a rabbit pie for myself. All was prepared to our taste, i.e. good pub grub, warm, fresh, comfort food. The rooms were spacious, warm, with all the appropriate amenities one could ask for. If I was to say one thing that was disappointing I would have to say it was not being able to greet the security guard ;) He was out for a walk! W elope to return one day during the summer and take advantage of the surround scenery which from what we did see we loved. A great place, thoroughly recommended! Two thumbs up!

“Road trip”

Our first visit to Dartmoor and the location of the Forest Inn is sublime, surrounded by dramatic scenery and interesting walks, however we were disappointed by the restricted access to the River Dart.
The general ambience of the pub was cheerful and welcoming and the staff treated all requests with alacrity. Despite being a dog friendly establishment we found the room clean and well maintained.
The menu was somewhat unadventurous but hearty and toothsome, always welcome after a good walk.
