“WHEN IS A SANDWICH NOT A SANDWICH”

It makes sense when you live in an area to make a day out like a holiday, so venture to the Fal estuary and make a little adventure of crossing on the wonderful King Harry ferry. Almost as soon as you go round the wiggly bend and see the ferry, you feel like you are on holiday. A short but satisfying journey across the water and wend your way to St.Mawes, 10 - 15 minutes drive after disembarking. Turn right past the Rising Sun Pub and park the car and wonder back to the Idle Rock. The dining room with its panoramic views over the harbour and estuary is like being on board ship, most tables reveal this beautiful view. You get a lovely friendly welcome and a great choice on the menu. As we were just out for lunch, we decided to plump for a sandwich, well the care and attention and quality of this sandwich was brilliant, lovely soft fresh bread, with sumptuous filling and a gorgeous side salad with a sweet honey flavoured dressing....when is a sandwich not a sandwich, when you put the ingredients of the Idle Rocks location, together with friendly service and a properly prepared sandwich. Thank you

My Husband and I stayed at the IdIe Rocks Hotel for a couple of nights to celebrate our Birthdays and anniversary, the food was lovely and the staff very friendly nothing was too much trouble, our room was just what we wanted and the view perfect and on the evening
when the tide was in and the waves splashed up the wall, well you had to be their to appreciate it.
Will definitely go again.

“Nice food, Too little and expensive.”

Our local radio station have a promotion "Pay £25.00 get £50 in food and drink" at certain restaurants in the area. There are usually 50 or 60 vouchers available from 9.0 clock on a Thursday morning so you have to log in and buy a voucher on line. Some popular eateries are sold out in minutes and some languish for weeks on end with very few vouchers purchased. The Idle Rocks had not sold many vouchers so I was a little worried I had many a mistake. Previous reviews on here had not been that great and the review the day before we going sounded terrible. The meal was for my wife's birthday and when she read the review was ready to cancel and go elsewhere. We persisted and went along and my son also came along. The menu on line looked very good so we went for it. The position over looking St Mawes harbour is great but being a winter evening we missed the view. Our waitress who was Spanish from Madrid was very pleasant and we had banter in my limited Spanish to break the ice. We opted for the 3 courses but without wine when we saw the price list.
Our food was very well presented and all 3 courses were very nice but such small portions I thought McDonalds on the way home was going to be needed. My main course was Brill which is a flatfish like a plaice came and the piece of fish was around 2 inches square sat on a square of other veg. My son and wife fared a little better with the fish pie which looked more inviting and certainly more filling. Over all it was a good night, the food was good, well prepared and tasty and our waitress was very nice and attentative. The bill without coffee was a little over £136.00 for the 3 of us.Add on the £25 already paid for the voucher less £50.00 it was still and expensive but nice. Good value No.

“Surprisingly better than it would appear from the outside.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

The Idle Rocks clings to the sea shore right in the middle of St Mawes. The building appears very unpretentious from the street because you are effectively looking at the back of the hotel and the rear wall is right on the narrow road. On entering, the reception is far more luxurious than one would imagine from the outside and the vista through the front windows is the beautiful bay that is St Mawes.
We ate dinner here one evening during our out of season stay in St Mawes and we were both pleasantly surprised at how good it was. The restaurant is decked out in light wood panelling and chrome and is on several levels affording good views out across the bay even from the back of the restaurant, clever design. It reminded us of a top quality cruise liner dining room.
The menu is quite limited and, I think I would tire of it quite quickly if I stayed here for any length of time. The food though is excellent, if a little pretentious. I think the chef is practising for the next series of Masterchef!. You can just see Michel Roux commenting on it " the fish is perfectly cooked, well seasoned, and your presentation is fresh and modern!" Having eaten it though, he would probably then walk across the road for some fish & chips to fill him up.

“Always lovely”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

When it comes to hotels, there are many who say that you should never go back to the same place twice, for fear of disappointment. It's a view that in general I tend to share, but in the case of the Idle Rocks we have visited quite a few times and have never been disappointed!
Arrived early and took the little ferry across to Falmouth - it departs from the harbour across from the hotel every hour.
We checked in on our return from Falmouth, and our room ("Goldeneye") was warm, comfortable, large, and with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the beautiful sea outside.
Lovely bathroom - huge bath, and a separate walk-in shower.
The evening "turn-down" service was a nice, traditional touch.
Public areas downstairs were as nice as ever. Warm and comfortable on this chilly night, with a real fire blazing in the hearth.
Didn't dine at the hotel this time, as we fancied a simple pub-supper in the village, but the menu still looked tempting (and the off-season "Classics" menu looked very good value).
A good night's sleep, assisted by the always-pleasing sound of the waves gently lapping the shore outside (although the Idle Rocks is also lovely when it's blowing a gale and the waves hit the front of the hotel!).
Very pleasant breakfast (although a shame about the cheap fruit juices that seem to be a feature of every hotel) - the "Full English" was ample and hot - although we did think that the beef sausages were a bit strong for breakfast - a traditional pork sausage would have been better in our opinion.
Staff were, without exception, friendly, efficient and helpful.
Looking forward to the next time!

Room Tip: Definitely best to go for a sea-view room. The views are amazing!
