“Nice Surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

We booked the Howards Hotel for the New Year festivities in St Ives. This was the best values Hotel/B&B we could find within walking distance of St Ives (25 Minutes). We went not expecting much but what we did find was a very pleasant welcome. Rooms a little dated but very clean and a comfortable bed - didn't require anything else. In the morning we went for Breakfast bacon roll for me and a full english for the other half. Both were excellent, along with the home made jams for the toast.
I do not want to fool anyone this is not 5* but a the owners were lovely and made us feel at home at all times. More than any 5* would give you. The hotel has a "proper" bar whereby the locals drink (since St Ives is so seasonal it is required to provide an income), but they are all very friendly and nothing to be scared off.
I would visit again.

“Just awful!!!”

When we arrived there was a nice friendly lady outside stood with a group of man all smoking. Another lady (not so friendly) showed us to our room, which was dirty, tatty, smelt old, draughty due to ill fitting windows, the sliding door to the en-suite!!! wouldnt close without brut force. The view from the window would have been beautiful if the window was clean enough to see out of !! The dinning room was very old and dirty looking. We also found out (from a tenent) that part of the hotel is used to home people on hosing benefit.
In fact this isn't a hote,l it is a locals pub with rooms and a very load darts team!! I would not recommend this place to anyone.

“Great Bacon Sarnies”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 October 2011

I have to say I didn’t read any reviews before I stayed here – so I was under no illusions what to expect. I have to say I was greeted by friendly staff and given key to my room – great after 5 hour drive. Ok it’s not the Ritz, yes it does need some sprucing up. But, it didn’t smell, my bed was comfortable, the shower was warm and working. The radiator worked in my room and the windows opened – so I could adjust the temperature accordingly. Breakfast was good, serviced quickly and was certainly freshly cooked not microwaved. On the day I left (early start) the owner did me a couple of rounds of bacon sarnies – I’d paid my bill so he could have just waved me off and saved the cost of the bacon.
Yes I’ve been to better places (and paid more), but I’ve been to a lot worse (and also paid more). The litmus test is- would I go back? And the answer is yes I would its good value for money

“Value for money and a warm welcome”

The Howards is excellent value for money. It is homely and welcoming and the staff are really helpful. It is a beautiful walk along the coast into St. Ives. The rooms are comfortable and very clean.
