“Alright accommodation... quirky character...friendly hosts”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2009

I stayed at this hotel for one night.

The hotel is ideally situated near the St Ives train station. I recommend you throughly familiarise yourself with a map before you begin your journey into finding it. Be careful of the narrow roads and on-coming traffic if walking there too. If you have heavy luggage I recommend using a taxi. From St Ives train station to walk to the hotel is about 5minutes up hill ( its not too steep) - you go pass the bus station to get there on the hill. ( you may not notice it is a bus station too so watch out for it)

To be fair this hotel is rated TWO stars. I have never stayed at two star accommodation before in England. If you are looking for a touch of luxury/class then I would not recommend you stay here... If you are looking for a hotel with 1960-70's character then this is the place for you.

1. The garden at the front of the hotel is a complete jungle and could do with a bit of combing. This jungle covers the blue sign addressing it as Channings...so be alert for it.

2. Breakfast was average

3. I would grade the housekeeping services a generous 4/10. Carpets needed steam clean. They forgot to put toilet paper in my bathroom

4. I felt a bit cold here...and heating could not be turned on.- blanket was thin as tissue

This is being blunt... this hotel could do with some fresh blood/ ideas/ refurbishment...it has the potential to do better. I slightly aggree with what writer Jennifer has written here.

This was not the hotel for me....however if you are looking for character then it may be for you.

“Fantastic Hotel!”

My friends and I arrived in St Ives with nowhere to stay so went to the Information Centre to check if they could find us somewhere... they were extremely helpful and directed us to Channings. We found it easily as we were walking (car was parked in one of the car parks up on the hill at the time).

Couldnt believe our luck when we got there and were greeted by the very friendly owner. He wasnt sure we would like the room because other people had turned it down but it was exactly what we needed... we were 3 girls and needed a triple. It was extremely comfortable and we were disappointed that we could only stay one night. Would have liked to stay for the whole weekend but we arrived on the final night of our break (having stayed in Newquay the previous night - what a mistake that was!) and we had to get back to London!

St Ives itself is fabulous, the hotel is a short walk from town.

We didnt have the breakfast as we slept in so cant comment on that.

The owners were very friendly and we had no problem with them.

Fantastic hotel in a Fantastic seaside town

“Totally agree with Jennifer24”

We were given such bad directions to get there, when we arrived, after parking the car in their "car park"(??),only to find the room we booked was given to someone else. The reception wasn;t at all welcoming, in fact, we were made to think we were more of a nuisance than as paying guests. Everything about the place was old and tired, like the other guests we saw. Jennifer24 has got it spot on - I couldn't bear to stay there even for one night, so we left. the owners responded by saying, we'll have no problem re-letting the room, we have people who come back for the last 10 years. Good for them!!

“A Great Place To Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 June 2008

My husband and I recently stayed at Channings Hotel in St Ives. We are regulars to the town but have never stayed at Channings before. What a treat! The bedroom was spotless (with a great view over that incredible bay) and the breakfast we enjoyed each morning could honestly be called a 'full English' - delicious!

Excellent value, we'll certainly be going again, when we next visit St Ives.

  • Liked — General cleanliness and also the friendliness of the staff
  • Disliked — Coming home

“Clean and comfortable”

We have stayed in this Hotel many times, the owners are freindly and very helpful, the rooms are clean, some with stunning seaviews, all are ensuite and serviced daily.

The owner cooks full english breakfast with varying extras each day, and there is a choice of fresh fruit salads, yoghurts cereals and toasts..

Evening meals are available again with a good selection of salads, roasts, etc throughout the week, the hotel has a bar so that you can enjoy wine with your meals..

Parking is available, this hotel is a short walk from the town so we hardly used you car from arrival to deparure..

We have a small baby which was no problem at all, they provide a travel cot, high chairs and are happy to help with warming bottles etc..

A great base for your Cornish trips..
