“Very enjoyable weekend”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

I booked this hotel on the back of their sister hotel in Salcombe, where I had stayed previously. We had booked a family room for two days in January. We own an hotel ourselves and January is the only time we can get away for the whole year, so for this break we wanted somewhere special, that was kid friendly and didn't seem to be too "posh" that the kids couldn't enjoy themsleves (14, 10 and 6). The benefit of the spa was the plus point, as was our previous experience at their sister hotel last year.

After booking it - I then looked at Trip Advisor and I was quite shocked by some of the grim reports.

We turned up expecting the worst.

Arrival was a dream - they don't have a car park outside the hotel, but it was no problem, the very friendly concierge took it to their car park for us. I believe that a car park is being built opposite the hotel (but don't quote me on that - it was something my wife heard)

The reception staff were excellent - indeed all of the staff at the hotel get an A**** from me - they were all professional, polite - just perfect. Couldn't fault one of them

The room was one of their family rooms (118) mentioned in a previous report. The room was fine, a little tired, could have done with a touch up here and there, but was by no means bad. The window was a bit grubby. The bathroom - prefect. It passed what I call the black bath sealant test. The TV could have been mounted on the wall, but not that bad. Bed - very comfortble. Wifi didn't work, but it seemd there was some work being done to rectify this - repeaters were being installed. O2 phone reception - none

There is a building site next door to the hotel, it's getting near to completion, so that problem should go away soon, but it didn't effect us in any way. That's not the hotel's fault

The Bar - was gorgeous, fantastic place to relax before dinner, yes it was expensive £9.50 for a double G&T - That's why I only had the one - and sipped it!! Slightly lesser price and I would have probably spent more in the long run. The bar wasn't busy - probably becasue of the price.

We were booked for Dinner B&B. The restaurant was nice, the staff were very professional and attentive, the food was fine - not The Ritz, but better than most. Previous reports pointed to a it being unprofessional, not at all - the service was excellent, the food was fine. Wine was a little expensive for the quality - their cheapest bottle of whte (Pinot) was about £19 The restaurant was about 2/3'rds full on the days we were there. View from the restaurant is great.

My only gripe - which I think was a mistake - was on the 2nd day, I ordered a cheese board for desert. It said Cornish Cheeses. I received a piece of Cornish Brie, Cornish Blue and another cheese I didn't recognise at first glance , which was very hard. I tried it and it was hard to chew, then after a couple of mouthfulls I realised it was parmesan, the solid form, which (in my opinion) is for grating, not a cheese board and is about as Cornish as Ronald McDonald. But I would put this down as an error in the kitchen. I didn't mention it at the time, the opportunity never arose, but other than that small glitch - everyhting was great. One previous review moaned about 9 chips. Yes I also got 9 chips with my steak, but that is the style of the meal. I have had that at other "gormet" restaurants also. The steak was perfect (no steak knife though)

The Spa - was amazing. However having kids we were only allowed in between 10am and 11am, then 3:30pm to 5pm. Which is enough - HOWEVER - At 3:25pm my wife took the kids down to the spa, I came a few minutes later to be told that the spa was full and they couldn't take any more people - I pointed out that my wife and kids were already in there and that she had signed me in, so the lady allowed me in - but she was turning people away. The pool had about 20 people, about 50% were children. I would say we were probably the only family with kids staying at the hotel, so I can only assume that the rest were local members, which is normal. Had we as a family turned up at the spa at 3:30pm (5 mins later) we would have been turned away. This would have been a MAJOR upset. When we left the spa at 4:30pm, the resecptionist was still turning people away. She said that she is issued with a certain number cards for the changing room lockers, which are given to each visitor and once they had all been handed out she wasn't allowed to let any more people in. Bit odd - as most of the lockers in the changing room were empty. The pool and gym were not full

I think the management should take a look into this. As the time for families to be allowed into the spa was very limited anyway, but had we been turned away there would have been a major upset and I would have left the hotel and not paid. I imagine that in the peak season this is going to cause major problems. I would suggest the management have a rethink. The Spa is new - so it's a learning

In conclusion it seems to me that this hotel has either been taken over by the Harbour Group fairly recently - or it's had some money put into it. Some of the rooms ( the ones you see on their website) have been re-furbished. I would hope that there is still some money left to refurbish all of the hotel to the standard of the bar and spa. Continued renovation would turn this place into a gem.

All in all - would I go back? 70% - 30% yes. If there is the spa problem - then no - I wouldn't risk it.

Room Tip: There are rooms that have been recently re-furbished

“A great Winter Break Deal”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

I really like this hotel. It is old but spacious and nicely decorated.
Rooms are good and many have see views.
Great Jacuzzi baths!
In the winter there are some great value deals.
Food was ok. Slightly rich and quirky when we ate there last.
Short walk to St Ives centre (5 mins) or just at the rear of the beach and rail station.

Good evening and thank you for taking the time to post your review. I am very happy to read how you found our special winter offer such great value - the jacuzzi bath really does make a special difference on a cold evening! Look forward to seeing you again soon.

“4.5 out of 5”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

Stayed here for 3 nights in between xmas and new year. I cannot really fault the hotel but cannot give it 5 out of 5 as it is not perfect (nearly). Had a lovely room (306) overlooking the beach, it was one of the refurbished rooms, massive superking bed, nice decor, lamps etc and a lovely big bathroom, my only disappointment was the fact that the bathroom mirror does not have a light, there is no natural light in the bathroom (not a problem as the bathroom itself is lovely, clean and new) but it is quite dark so applying make-up, shaving etc was difficult. Other than that the room was lovely, spotless ! We went to sleep listening to sea and woke up listening to the sea (very romantic !). We arrived at 4pm along with several other people pulling up outside and checking in, the reception staff were wonderful (thanks Wendy) at no stage were we ignored or left waiting. The greeting was friendly and efficient, we were checked in quickly and a porter found to park the car and help with bags. The hotel was full during our stay and busy, having read a few negative reviews about the the parking and checking in I am surprised, it was seamless. Our car was parked a few hundred yards away and was easily accessed. Breakfast was superb, nice help yourself area for fruit and pastries, everything hot was cooked to order and really nice. Service was first class every morning, most of the restaurant staff were very young, they were ALL. without exception courteous, efficient, friendly and helpful. And a superb view across the beach to the sea, wonderful. Bar staff also very attentive. The restaurant, bar and reception area all newly refurbished and tasteful, the stairs and hallways could do with new carpets and some paint but this did not detract from the general ambienice of the hotel, it would appear to be a work in progress. We used the spa on 2 afternoons, very tastefully done, nice pool (not for serious swimmers) it is not very big and about 4'6 at its deepest but it did the trick. Again, very busy so we could not avail ourselves of the sun loungers to relax as they were all taken, the steam and sauna also busy, but it was xmas and the hotel was full. We still enjoyed the experience. A minor point, the WiFi was not working and we were told that they were not sure when it would be fixed, (at least they were honest!). Great location, it took about 7 minutes to walk to the harbour and the shops and restaurants. There is still extensive building work across the road and to the side of the hotel, I doubt if it will be finished in time for spring/summer, the sites were closed during our stay, so although not a particularly attractive sight, there was no noise. So, for the few, minor glitches outlined I cannot give 5 out of 5. All in all we had a wonderful time, I would definitely return and would definitely recommend.

Room Tip: Ask for sea view and a refurbished room.

Good afternoon and thank you for your wonderful review. I am delighted that you enjoyed your room (I have noted the light and will address this), food, service, Spa and general cleanliness. There are a lot of people who work very hard here and your praise for their work and friendliness is extremely welcome. Thank you once again and we hope to see you again soon with significantly improved wifi.

“Nice hotel- Could Be Better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

Having stayed at this hotel previously [Twice] we were somewhat dissappointed by our latest stay. The position of the hotel and the sea view rooms are excellent but after this it leaves a lot to be desired. My wife and I booked for their Christmas package at a cost of £800.00 arriving on Friday 23rd Dec and Departing on Tuesday 27th Dec IE 4 Nights which at the time of booking we thought was a little expensive but would be worth it for a Christmas Break.
On our arrival in the afternoon we had the same problem as other guest in that there was nowhere to park our car and had to wait for one of the porters to follow us down to the beach car park.
We were allocated room 209 on the second floor with excellent sea and beach views
but the room was a little bit tired in furnishings and decore but the bed was spotlessly clean and comfortable. On going down to dinner we called in the bar first for a pre dinner drink but there was nobody there to serve us, after a little while a lady appeared and served us with our drinks but at these prices very expensive to say the least. Again like previous clients we had to wait for our order to be taken and the time taken between starters and main course was to long.
The breakfast was again a long wait plus there was no croissants or marmalade left which one would have thought knowing that this was the Christmas holiday they would have been prepared for all events.
Evening meal much the same IE again a long wait and a restricted menu, these two comments apply to all of our stay.
Waiting staff in the restaurant need to be more attentive to peoples request [Need more training/experience] and get the orders right plus deliver to the right tables and in the right order
we received our desserts before our main course.
Unless there was a big inprovement in standards we would be reluctant to stay here again

Good afternoon and thank you for your review. I am delighted that you enjoyed your room assignment and you will be equally delighted to learn that in the next 6 weeks we will be refurbishing these rooms to a fantastic standard.
We have recently recruited a new Executive Chef who has made great progress already in the menu content and quality. We are undergoing a trainign programme for the service staff to ensure that we address the issues you have noted. Naturally, there were a couple of rather innocent errors noted in your review that are unfortunate, but I feel we are making great strides forward and whilst there will always be the occasional clanger, I am sure that on your next visit you will enjoy the improvements you have helped to bring about. Please do contact me at the hotel so I can personally attend to every detail of your next booking.
