“adequate accommodation”

Had read many negative reviews but....owners and staff were friendly, breakfast was great and the views were stunning, but the hotel was very jaded and outdated. The room was very tight and difficult to move around in but it was clean and the bed was very comfortable. However, we are frequent visitors to St. Ives and have stayed in many lovely hotels there with far superior facilities. the St. Eia offered no such facilities but is still charging the same rates as the better hotels. The owners should not feel that the views, stunning though they are, entitle them to charge such high prices.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the hotel- the front is on a major road

“Like living in Grandma's house...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2011

The owners were lovely and so was the cooked breakfast, but I'm afraid that's where the compliments begin and end. The room looks like it was last decorated in about 1970 and the shower just dribbled - no hope of doing any kind of showering!! The bed was sheets and blanket rather than duvet (admittedly this is a personal thing) but the place really smelt bad a lot of the time. A very basic beach-side B&B - no frills whatsoever.

“Worth it for the view alone!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2011

My room had a sea view which was wonderful (see photo), and I didn't even have to pay extra for it! The beds were decent with clean bedding and very good pillows (I hate cheap pillows!) The room was well stocked, with drinks making facilities, plenty of storage, a TV, en suite with towels provided, all clean and all in good condition.
The fried breakfast, although I only had toast and cereal, looked nicely cooked, and there was a wide range available, and the dining room overlooked St Ives. The decor throughout was a bit dated, but in good condition and it was clean, which is the main thing.
The walk into town took no more than 15 minutes (probably less if I didn't keep stopping for the views!) and right near the train/bus stations (although you get no noise from either). The owners were lovely and very helpful, and I was allowed to leave my luggage when I checked out so i could spend my final day in St Ives luggage-free.
Being on the outskirts of St Ives and looking down over the town, it's no surprise that you have to walk up a hill to get to the hotel, but access is good and there's parking available.
Overall I'd give my stay a 9.5/10 - falling down only on the decor, which I could ignore as I only slept in the room! I would highly recommend this hotel, and at £50 a night for a single room it's an absolute steal!!!! :)

Room Tip: For an extra £5 oer night you can ensure a sea view, although I suppose this depends on availability...

Stayed at St eia fir 3 nights in aug, room quite small, but clean and comfortable and view was fab. Arrived early and room was ready, and breakfast was really good, and again the view at breakfast is amazing. Enjoyed the short walk down to the beach. Great location. Would stay there again.

“It was fine”

Stayed here with some trepidation having read some of the bad reviews, but have to say we had a good time. Ok, it is a bit dated but the water was hot, we had tea making facilities, a fine breakfast, somewhere to park the car and a five minute walk to the beach.
I think we do expect so much nowadays when we pay for a hotel, but this is St Ives, where a bit of quaintness is a good thing- if you want minimalistic sleekness go to New York or London- otherwise embrace the experience ( just barter a bit on the price as I think you will be upset if you pay over the odds for the 'embracing' experience!)
