We decided to book a trip to Cornwall and found this guest house through the Cornishlight website which we were interested in. We sent an online query asking if they had any twin room availability for a week at the end of May. We got a reply approx 2 days later saying they had. We decided to ring regarding their car park and if there was a charge for this. The lady that answered said they had a "large car park" with no fee and they required £100 cheque and we asked for confirmation of this booking.
We got an email straight away saying "Hi, thanks for the call, £100 cheque required" with one attachment showing directions to the guest house and car park.We sent the cheque the following day as requested. A week later my friend phoned again to ask for the booking confirmation. Another week passed by and still no confirmation. Therefore, phoned for a third time and left a message. She rang my friend back the same day and was apologetic, had said she had lost my friends email address and would send the confirmation through. We then received an email with "booking confirmed" and no further information eg, check in times, breakfast times etc.
On our day of arrival and after a long 6 hour journey we were looking forward to settling in. We phoned them an hour before, as requested on the phone previously to advise them we were on our way. Nobody answered, therefore left a message on their answering machine service.
Upon arrival, we followed the directions we were given but were unable to find the car park, only the guest house. We pulled over to the side of the road to ring the guest house to ask for further help and got no reply. My friend decided to go and knock on the door and waited for 10mins with no answer yet again but could hear music from inside. We rang the mobile number on the email we had printed off from the guest house. The same lady we had spoken to previously answered and tried directing us to the car park which she said was on the main road. After approx 20mins she said she would ring the occupier at the guest house to come and meet us. We explained to her we had already knocked on the door and had no answer so my friend was going to go to the door again to show him where we were and we finally got answer from him. He came to the car and pointed to the car park which was just a grass verge on a side street with a sign saying "Private Parking you will be clamped" but no sign saying it belonged to ocean heights so i told him i wasnt going to park there. He mentioned that a guest had parked there the day before and it was okay, but i wasnt going to take that risk, when we were in a strange place, 600miles from home. He told us to ring the lady we had already spoken to so we did and told her the same thing. I told her that if i got clamped, she was copping for the bill!!!!!!
She said she would get the owner to ring us to which he did. He told my friend that we had nothing to worry about and we should be enjoying our holiday and the nice weather and that we would sort it the following day over breakfast. I spoke to him and he assured me that it was ocean heights sign but by this time, 1hr later, we felt very frustrated and just wanted to get to our room as we were both very tired. We were still very uncomfortable doing this so we parked up the road and headed to the guest house to settle in.
Then our next problem occurred...... we were given two separate keys by the occupier and we just looked at him confused as we had initially booked a twin room. He still insisted that we viewed the rooms to which we did. We said we were going to go away and think about it. We headed back to the car and a local resident had heard the earlier commotion with the "car park". She approached us to recommend that we stay in a nearby hotel which did have a twin room for the same price available and they also had an onsite car park. We went and had a look as we didnt want to agree without discussing getting our deposit back first. We rang the owner to discuss this matter as we had had so much hassle already. He was a little ratty but agreed to return the cheque to my friends home address. We wanted to have something in writing to say that that is what he was going to do but as he was in penzance we went back to the guest house and asked the occupier if he would be able to do this on behalf of the owner but he refused and said he did not work there! We had decided by this point that we were going to stay in the nearby hotel instead. We had found out the following day via their website that the guest house accepted all major cards so therefore we rang the owner and asked him if he could refund the card rather than send a cheque when we were in the area. He agreed and said he would meet us at the house at 7.30pm the following day (two days after our arrival)
We decided to leave it at that and enjoy the rest of our holiday. On the day of the meeting we arrived at the house approx 7.30 but still no sign of him and no answer at the door either. We phoned the owner and again, no answer so left a message on his voicemail. Whilst waiting, we noticed the new car parking sign saying "Ocean Heights Private Car Park". We waited around for 40mins and decided to give up and was annoyed that he had failed to meet us as agreed.
We phoned again the following day and explained our disappointment. He said he had a broken down car, coincidently and was quite aggressive towards us.
We tried all week to get our deposit back, to no avail. Still waiting to this day!!!!!!!
We enjoyed our hols to Cornwall, the hotel we finally stayed in was lovely, the people were friendly except for our encounter with the Ocean Heights owner and his staff, the area was beautiful and tranquil. All was great.
WE WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS GUEST HOUSE TO ANYONE AS YOU GET:
1) RARELY RECEIVED AN ANSWER ON EMAILS, LANDLINES, MOBILE PHONES OR THE DOOR
2) NO CUSTOMER SERVICE
3) NO REFUND
4) NO PROPER CAR PARK, JUST A GRASS VERGE ON A SIDE STREET, NOT VISIBLE FROM THE GUEST HOUSE
5) GUEST HOUSE IS NOT REGISTERED WITH THE TOURIST BOARD
The list could go on.........!!!
