“I would not put my worst enamy”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 August 2011

The room was dirty, the food was poor, bed was on a slope, the window was help open with a brick, it was very noisy with all the clubs turning out. the shower door never closed, the shower was just a trickle, the bath room was so small you had difficulty squeezing in between the wash basin and toilet to sit on the toilet.. You pay for what you get, not worth paying for.

“Cheap but reasonable for short stay”

This hotel is an older style. Owners very helpful and chatty. Rooms small and some things could do with repair.e.g. loose tap. Room small, but beds reasonable. Good full English breakfast. It is reasonable value for what you pay if you just want somewhere to sleep for a short stay. Very close to railway station was a big plus for us as we came by train. You would not want to have a heavy bag, as we were on the 3rd floor and there is no lift.

“Perfect for one night!”

I stayed here through the recommendation of a nearby hotel (as they were full for that particular day) and I'm pleased that I did. This guest house is very close to both the raliway and coach stations which was a great convenience to me. The lady who greeted me upon my arrival was very friendly and helpful, and showed me to my room which whilst being fairly average was sufficient for a night's stay. The breakfast was excellent and the owner was able to assist with my vegetarian requirements. I'll certainly come again, the breakfast alone makes it worthwhile! Also, unlike a lot of things in Penzance, the Whiteways represents good value for money.

“One night only”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 April 2011 via mobile

Stayed here for one night and that was enough, the room was tiny with a single bed that was only just bearable, the decor had a used and outdated feel. the worst part was waking up in the morning and being engulfed in the smell of fried breakfast in my room i tried to open the window and it didn't open! i like my full English but having my clothes and room smell of them was another matter, and to top that the actual breakfast was poor the plates and cutlery were dirty. I know it's a cheap stay but never again, i question whether the local tourist board have actually checked this place out.

“Dirty, Dated and Bloody Freezing!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 March 2011

The online photographs are a sham, my room looked nothing as I expected. Either because I was booked into a different room (or possibly a different Guest House!?).

As soon as I was shown to my room the daughter of the house proceeded to turn down the heating - I didn't complain as it was quite warm on arrival. This changed however when I discovered that neither the bedroom nor separate toilet room had windows that closed. Consequently I froze all night.

The bed was small and didn't have a fitted sheet on it, only a small duvet that wouldn't cover me no matter how hard I tried. Nor did the bedding smell freshly laundered.

On my first morning as I was getting ready to go out, a woman walked into my room without knocking, saw me, apologised and left. This was at 9.25 a.m. I left soon after and didn't return until after 4.00 p.m. only to find that my room had not been entered since I left it. The bed hadn't been made, bin hadn't been emptied, nothing. Clearly my earlier call that morning was my only opportunity for my room to be serviced.

The sound on the TV was barely audible and so I didn't bother turning it back on.

With peeling wallpaper, damp on the walls and a black mark on the light coloured curtains, this room fell well below my high and exacting standards.

Further inspection revealed a smudged/streaky mirror, dirt on the soap holder in the shower, in fact dirt everywhere, including on the windowsills and paintwork.

This room should never have been let in fact the whole place should be closed down and completely cleaned and refurbished.

How it passes checks by the Tourist Board I have no idea.

I stayed for two nights but would never stay there again.

On my second night in Penzance I went to the Longboat Hotel for a meal (Whiteways does offer evening meals, but not, it seemed, to me personally) and discovered that they too offered accommodation. The Longboat was clean and friendly, my meal was fresh and delicious (fish, the catch of the day) and I'm sure I would have been much warmer there too!!

I give the Whiteways Guest House 1 as the woman there cooked a nice breakfast.

Aside from that, it is ideally located for Penzance Railway Station.
