The online photographs are a sham, my room looked nothing as I expected. Either because I was booked into a different room (or possibly a different Guest House!?).
As soon as I was shown to my room the daughter of the house proceeded to turn down the heating - I didn't complain as it was quite warm on arrival. This changed however when I discovered that neither the bedroom nor separate toilet room had windows that closed. Consequently I froze all night.
The bed was small and didn't have a fitted sheet on it, only a small duvet that wouldn't cover me no matter how hard I tried. Nor did the bedding smell freshly laundered.
On my first morning as I was getting ready to go out, a woman walked into my room without knocking, saw me, apologised and left. This was at 9.25 a.m. I left soon after and didn't return until after 4.00 p.m. only to find that my room had not been entered since I left it. The bed hadn't been made, bin hadn't been emptied, nothing. Clearly my earlier call that morning was my only opportunity for my room to be serviced.
The sound on the TV was barely audible and so I didn't bother turning it back on.
With peeling wallpaper, damp on the walls and a black mark on the light coloured curtains, this room fell well below my high and exacting standards.
Further inspection revealed a smudged/streaky mirror, dirt on the soap holder in the shower, in fact dirt everywhere, including on the windowsills and paintwork.
This room should never have been let in fact the whole place should be closed down and completely cleaned and refurbished.
How it passes checks by the Tourist Board I have no idea.
I stayed for two nights but would never stay there again.
On my second night in Penzance I went to the Longboat Hotel for a meal (Whiteways does offer evening meals, but not, it seemed, to me personally) and discovered that they too offered accommodation. The Longboat was clean and friendly, my meal was fresh and delicious (fish, the catch of the day) and I'm sure I would have been much warmer there too!!
I give the Whiteways Guest House 1 as the woman there cooked a nice breakfast.
Aside from that, it is ideally located for Penzance Railway Station.
