“Cheap and kinda cheerful”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2010

Stayed here on New Years Eve with 2 friends. Got a room with 2 sets of bunk beds. Very small en suite with shower, basin, toilet. Communal lounge area downstairs with pool table, dartboard, a bar and a communal kitchen with microwave etc. A bit of a free for all and the place seemed to be a bit of a state in the morning after everyone had used it, but it was New Years Eve. GOOD POINTS - clean fresh bedding, short walk to nightlife, casual attitude to checking out the next day (we didn't leave until 1pm). Fun atmosphere around the place in the evenings when everyone’s getting ready to go out. You could probably get away with taking people back to your room too – not that I’m advocating that!, Friendly owner. BAD POINTS - No hot water and no heating!! Plumbing was broken. Had to go downstairs to another room to shower and the room was freezing. Owner was very apologetic but didn't knock any money off or allow us extra duvets. The decor is pretty dated and a bit shabby. Smells a bit fusty as you walk through the main door. The en suites are tiny but had the shower worked it would have been sufficient. No TV but a broken retro radio type thing on the wall which didn’t work. Basically it’s not exactly luxurious but if you just want somewhere to sleep that’s fairly cheap and close to the action then it’s fine. However on the way into town I did notice a lot more hostels along the same stretch of road which may well have been better. Do your research.

“New name (the Blue Sky Surf Lodge), same dreadful Trethorne hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2009

The Trethorne hotel has just changed it's name to the "Blue Sky Lodge, Newquay", possibly in an attempt to move itself away from the bad reviews it's had. Now it markets itself as a happening party hotel for those who like to surf.

Underneath, it's the same old hotel, with bad rooms, worse plumbing, and staff who seem to be totally bewildered all the time. Oddly, because it's now a hostel not a hotel, the prices have risen markedly, and there are fewer facilities.

The renaming has happened so fast, at the peak of the season, that there is just a hand painted sign in the car park calling itself the Blue Sky Surf Lodge. Everything else, from the bill to the bar, is still the Trethorne Hotel.

The accomodation says that "Free car parking is awavilable". Alas, because the car park is full of the staff cars and 2 hostel vans, only 4 car parking spaces are available for guests: I ended up having to use the pay and display around the corner for 2 days, which was expensive. The hostel also says that free wifi is available - oh no it's not.

It's in a good location - just 20 minutes walk from the centre of town. There is a large pool room, and a "lively" bar on site. However the bar is closed for most of the day, and as the hostel has only been open for 3 weeks, most of the staff & the owner are very raw and new: they simply don't know what to do about questions, as noone has ever asked before.

Rooms are utterly dreadful, tiny, dirty, smelling of smoke, and with the worst bathroom I've ever seen. However, it charges the same as a usual hotel.

The hostel is mainly used by stag groups, which is great if you want to party - less so if you don't want to be constantly woken up by the animals partying until 4am.

“what a dump!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 June 2007

Stayed at the Trethorne for my brother in laws stag weekend and all I can say is what a dump.
Took at least half an hour to check in and were told we had to pay £30 each bond, when booking out (took 1 hour) they seemed relunctant to give it back.
The rooms smelt, beds were dirty (one was so small that Ronnie Corbett would struggle to sleep on it) and the bathroom needed to be demolished. The breakfast was disgusting, I am not a fussy eater (to be honest I'd eat anything) but this was bad.
I have stayed in a few places on stag weekends and I know it's difficult to get accomodation for a group of blokes but this was one of the worst places I've ever stayed in.
Stay at your own risk!

I am pleased to announce that the Trethorne Hotel is now under new management and hopefully the past problems guests have experienced with the hotel and management can be put behind us.
The new resident mangers have 15 years of experience in the hospitality industry and have managed prestigious hotels such as Jamaica Inn, Cornwall.
Mark & Emily will extend a warm welcome to all future guests and hope that you will enjoy your stay at the Trethorne Hotel.

Bedding towels very clean.Decor newly done.Food quite good.Staff friendly and pleasant. 2 evenings entertainment quite good and enjoyable.
Negatives
A long walk from the seafront. En suite very narrow and difficult to manouvre.Towels not changed over 5 days.We had to ask for toilet rolls at the bar most embarrasing. No glasses in en suite to rinse mouth with after cleaning teeth. We had to move the beds in order to have ease of access to the wardrobe. Not enough surface area in the en suite or bedroom to put things down.No mirror in the room to check appearance.
