I stayed here last August as one of a party of four adult women seeking a nice weekend break. Alarm bells should have sounded when we arrived at the hotel early morning, prior to our two rooms being ready, and were asked to pay in full there and then. I have never been asked to pay in full for a hotel before checking out, let alone before even seeing the room. We were excited to be in Newquay, so paid up, left our bags and went off to explore the town and get some breakfast. The hotel was quite centrally located and it took less than 10 minutes to walk to town.
On returning to the hotel and seeing the corridors and our rooms, disappointment set in. The door to our room barely opened up to 80 degrees before it hit the bed. The room was tiny, décor very dated but it was generally clean, if tatty. We could only open one section of the window about 3 inches and there was no fan so the room was stuffy. The bed however, proved to be comfortable with a firm mattress but was let down by a worn, cheap polyester duvet and pillows that were ancient – I choose not to look at either too closely! There was also a problem later of noise from other guests shouting between rooms and lots of door banging.
The so-called “en-suite” brought another surprise – a room the size of a small airing cupboard with a shower tray to one side of the door and toilet the other. There was no room for the basin so it occupied precious space in the small bedroom. This tiny “bathroom” was damp, plastic sheets stuck to the tiles above the shower tray were peeling away and there was nasty black mould on the walls and ceiling no doubt due to insufficient ventilation. We couldn’t move rooms as we had been told the hotel was full. It was pretty evident from our trip into town that other hotels had no vacancies (it was the busiest weekend of the year) so we were stuck with it.
The manager of the hotel (assume he was a manager, I can’t imagine he would be so off if it were his own business) appeared jovial at first when taking our money. However, following a polite enquiry we made about our booking, he became curt and then rude and did not even offer a perfunctory “thank you” when we checked out at the end of our stay. His attitude was that guests were a great inconvenience to him. The staff in the breakfast room however were polite and helpful. The breakfast itself was pretty good too.
We didn’t expect 4* facilities for what was advertised as 2* hotel but we did expect at least to have something of a reasonably modern standard with a proper functioning bathroom. The two rooms we had looked nothing like those on the websites. The general appearance of the hotel was very tatty with old, chipped paintwork everywhere, cheap, mismatched furniture and worn carpets. Litter from takeaways, etc. that had been deposited on the little outside terrace when we arrived was still there when we departed. This is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in and the worst treatment by hotel management I have ever encountered.
All in all a bad experience and we won’t be returning. I would suggest you don’t make the mistake of making a first visit to this establishment.
