“Anti Gay and anti friendly Hotel!!!!”

On our arrival, together with my boyfriend, we were "welcomed" by a woman - presumably owner of the hotel (she didn't bother to introduce) surprised to see two male having booked double-bed room...."I expected a couple" was her comment. Cheeky mere!
To add an insult, we were warned by her to be quiet after 10pm and not to slum the doors as there were children on the same floor...!!! Also we were cautioned not to bring own food nor alcohol to the bedroom. (Off course we did). We felt as if we spoke to landlady showing us the room to rent and not the hotellier welcoming their guests. Customer service course highly recommended madam!!!
The breakfast (served only for half an hour!!!) experience left a lot be desired....the waiter was as dull and boring as the whole tired 60s / 70s deco . The full english tasted as if it was prepared an hour earlier and tasted like [--].
Apart from excellent views and very friendly cleaning lady (she should run this circus!!), everything else including uncomfortabe bed and shared toilets/shower rooms left a very unpleasant impresion on us.
If you go to Newquay, avoid St George hotel!

“Do not stay in this hotel!”

My husband booked a weekend away as a treat for my birthday. Upon arrival the old and shabby exterior of the building didn’t fill me with much hope, but I attempted to remain open-minded. The interior of the hotel didn’t fare any better, with decor and carpet from the eighties and a musty smell to match. Unfortunately the dismal state of the decor didn’t improve in our room. We were informed breakfast was between 8.30am and 9.00am. Not that this concerned us as the dirty stained cups left on the shabby furniture for us to make ourselves a cup of tea, as well as the dirty walls and pubic hair found in the sink led us to the conclusion that the kitchen would undoubtedly be even worse. Needless to say this suppressed our appetite. The old towels laid on the bed resembled cardboard, the toilet did not flush properly and there was a notice on the bathroom wall informing us in great detail how to fix the trickling shower if it failed to produce hot water. Unfortunately the shower failed to produce any water, hot or cold. We attempted to use the dirty shower at the end of the corridor, although more powerful, alas the water was still cold.

When we expressed our disappointment to the hotel proprietors they genuinely believed they were delivering a first class service, unfortunately their attitude did not reflect this. We were worryingly informed it took a certain level of intelligence to work a shower. If the most taxing thing their brain has to deal with on a daily basis is the workings of a shower - no wonder their hotel and service is so poor!

Needless to say we will not be returning and I have kindly asked my husband to merely hand over the money on my next birthday so as to avoid such mental cruelty again!

“Great Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 August 2008

I recently stayed at St George's with my family (including 8 mth old baby) and thought it was great. The hotel was lovely and in a good location and the service and friendliness of staff was excellent.
The rooms were very nice and they possibly had the most comfortable beds and pillows I've ever slept on!
The breakfast was superb and so was the other food available in the hotel.
The only down side for us was that there was no bath in our room (difficult with a young baby), but having said that I understand that there are rooms with baths available.
I would definitely recommend this hotel if you are looking for a base in Cornwall.

“good location, otherwise pretty basic”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 June 2008

My partner and I stayed at St Geroges Hotel over the bank holiday weekend after looking frantically for vacant rooms nearby and failing - the entire town was absolutely packed! The fact that they still had rooms available during this busy weekend made us think that maybe other people didn't want to stay here for a reason, and a tired look of the building and smallness of the rooms offered a good explanation. The owners were friendly and helpful with direction etc, but you would expect that as the least of things. They serve breakfast only for 30 minutes in the morning and we were woken up each morning by a ringing bell to inform the residents it was time to eat - which we didn't hugely appreciate as the main purpose of the trip was to chill out and have a lie in. It would have been better if we were being woken up to a wonderful array of fantastic feast but the offer was pretty basic.

I don't mean to sound negative - everything worked just fine and some rooms seemed to have wonderful view over the beach. And the central location meant that you were a few minutes' stroll from anywhere in Newquay. If you're after a basic, no-frills accommodation where you do not much more than shower and sleep (until the bell goes in the morning), this would be a good, budget bed for you. We are getting to that stage of life where we need a little bit more than 'just basic' in my travels, so we probably won't return unless we absolutely had to...

  • Liked — location, views
  • Disliked — the fact that it was a little too basic
