“Miserable Mattress; 7:45 Fire Alarm Wake Up; Avoid!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2010

Stayed one night in a first floor double and upped floor twin. Double was grubby, mattress was one of three worst ever - based on over 1000 nights of hotel stays, so that is impressive (impressively bad).

At 7:45 AM fire alarm went off and woke everyone in hotel - our early morning breakfast wake up call?

I would recommend avoiding at all costs --- next time we'll sleep in the car!

“OK, but NOT a hotel.”

The Broadmead is definitely NOT a hotel, but it IS a nice Guest House. The room was clean, but with a miss match of furniture, and in some area's it needed introduction to the 21st century. Room comforts / facilities (tea making, toiletries etc) are very good indeed, much better than one would get in accommodation rated much higher.
The male owner can be a little blunt but polite, and gives the impression that he believes that the world revolves around his little business, and things are done at his pace and when he's ready.
Breakfast is limited to just one hour (8:00 - 9:00 a.m.) which is not ideal if your stay is of a business nature and an early start would be preferred; and I was politely reminded of this by the owner, and corrected for entering the dining room and expecting breakfast 5 minutes early. It was worth the wait though, the food was very good and plentiful.
An onsite evening meal was not an option the night of my arrival, and I ate in one of the many lower town pubs, namely The Grapes, a very nice meal, but a long walk down quite a steep hill, one that I could have done without after a hard day's work.
Parking is also limited with cars tightly packed (about 7 cars when full), a bit of a worry if like me you've only just taken delivery of a brand new vehicle the previous day, and paint scratching and damage is highly possible.
Be warned, the adjacent main road comes alive very early at about 5:00 a.m. As there was no double glazing in my room (and I believe nowhere else in the building), this resulted in a not so good night’s sleep, and a day that began earlier than intended at 6:00 a.m.
To summarise, a very nice Guest House, but does need some TLC and updating.

“Dated and in need of decoration inside and out”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 July 2010

Having been telephoned and asked in a rude fashion to provide a first night deposit (£74), I expected much more than was on offer. The room, although spacious, and overlooking a small park, was in need of redecoration and the bathroom was old fashioned. The shower screen was so old that the rubber fixing at the bottom had become weak and so water leaked under it onto the floor. The sink was coming away from the wall, the tile grouting was mouldy and the toilet was stained. There was no milk provided for complimentary tea and coffee both days we were there and no decaffinated coffee sachets. Our bed was not made up after the first night, and having booked a double room, I did not expect two single beds pushed together. The cooked breakfast was small and toast limited. I was not offered any reduction in price when I complained.
