“Basic base for a boozey weekend”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 April 2011

12 of us hired out the sub-par 18bed dorm at this backpackers hostel for two nights for our stag do accommodation. It served its purpose. We were in Chester to party all night and just needed a roof over our heads for when we crashed.

The hostel toilet and washing facilities on the basement level weren't overly clean, although the shower's worked well. Anyone that has stayed in a hostel before will know that the quality of shower is very important.

The kitchen area was tidy and functional with a good number of utensils, which is in contrast to many other hostels I have stayed in.

As I previously mentioned our room was of a below-basic standard. Some of the beds were on their last legs, the carpet was heavily stained, and there was also only one window to this 18bed dorm. It was tidy though, and worked for us, just about.

I cannot comment on any of the upper floor bedrooms or bathrooms because I never ventured upstairs. However, the owner did hint that he was in the process of redecorating the rooms and our dorm was the next to be done. Infact we were being ushered out on the sunday while the contractors were being ushered in.

On the plus side the hostel had a small lounge area and a vhs library which included the classic 'Kevin and Perry Go Large'. Almost worth staying at the hostel just for that!

On the plus plus side, Chester is a great night out, just don't try to get in anywhere as a large group.

“Don't go here unless you like a small, cold room and dirty weekends!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 March 2011

We were greeted well and but I was defiantly NOT happy and would not stay here again!
My top 2 hate's is a cold & dirty room. I got both! I found a USED COMDOM down the side of the mattress just before going to bed so couldn't move. It made me wonder if the sheets had been changed or were clean at all? The pillows were flat and even with 2 it wasn't very good height
The room was still cold after heating was switched on at 6pm. I found the window not closing properly so had a draft down on my neck all night. As you can imagine, I didn't sleep well.

It surprised me the room was cold on arrival, and was told heating went on at 6pm. I have used hostels before and a I don't expect the earth for the money you pay,(we had the top floor en-suite double room for 1 night and paid £45) but I do expect a clean and warm room for what you pay. I think it was far to much money for what we got.

The room overall was so small. There was tea/coffee and kettle and a small alarm clock radio. There's no TV but that's ok for us and there wouldn't have been any room for it anyway! There was a large mirror in the room, I think to make the room look bigger but it doesn't work!

Shower room/toilet was badly designed a there no room to move or get to the toilet. There was damage light over the mirror and the door didn't want to stay open and bang my arm on it many times as it moved itself and opened next to the sink. The shower itself was good and looked new.

We did complain about the room and the manager was very apologetic and gave us got a full refund. He was very helpful and friendly.

The only good things were it was easy to find and not far from the train station and town centre. It’s on the main road into Chester with buses running by all the time outside the hostel. So it great if you use public transport like us. There was also a kitchen downstairs for making a drink and food and outside courtyard for the smokers.

“Felt so welcome!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 March 2011

Danny was relief manager at the time of my stay.
He was very understanding and helpful.
I stayed in room 1 which was very clean and comfortable. Free wi-fi was an added bonus.
Guest livingroom by reception felt really homely too! Would love to stay again!

“Avoid at all costs”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2011

This hostel was terrible. We had a great time in Chester but left we a sour taste in our mouths after staying at this hostel. Dirty showers, dirty rooms, no breakfast and no atmosphere and a whole lot more that I really can't be bothered to mention.
I personally have stayed in many hostel around the country but this is certainly one to avoid.

“Friendly and welcoming atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2010

Chester Backpackers had a proper hostel experience. The main staff member went out of his way to be accommodating and made us feel very welcome. It had a good self service kitchen and the rooms were warm. I would recommend staying at this hostel.
