“Very good parts and not so good parts”

My husband and I stayed as I was at a meeting at the hotel. We arrived about 1.30 hoping to have a swim etc and chill before the meeting at 6pm. Our room wasnt available and we were advised that official check in was at 3pm. Husband went for a walk and I chatted with colleagues. He returned at 2.50 and we went to check in - room still not ready. We waited and were given the key about a minute after 3. Why didnt they make our room a priority to clean as we were waiting? Such a quick customer service win!

Our room was fab - at the front with excellent views. It was part of a conference deal - rooms booked in bulk and all the same 24 hour delegate rate so I cant comment on the value of the room except to say it was a great room on the rate!

I tried the leisure facilities and they were superb. Large pool, jacuzzi, 2 steam rooms and sauna and I sampled them all and felt like a new women.

Dinner was as a group and I ordered steak rare which came medium and very fatty and chewy - it was sirloin as by the time we ordered (8pm) it was announced that there was no fillet left!. I returned my steak and got a new one - better. My next door neighbour asked for his medium to well done and it was rarer than my rare one - he said it was too rare and left half of it - It sounds like there isnt an effective system for ensuring people get the right meals. The meal was part of the package and I wasnt paying for it - however the quality of my meal did disappoint and I would be concerned about what I would get if I was paying with my own money so this would put me off booking for myself. My husband said his meal was excellent. Service was slow and we finished eating about 10. We went into the bar and waited some time to be served. Busy bar with only 2 staff serving. Drinks pricey (beer and cider £8) but what we expected to pay in a hotel of this type. Room ok for sleeping. Shower was a bit basic given the quality of the room - I did expect a qualilty power shower or some exotic type given the bathroom is huge and the shower a double one.

Breakfast good - lots of choice and food appeared fresh. We went to our meeting in the golf club house and there is a car conceierge service which we used. We had used a room in the meeting suite the previous evening which had been fit for purpose. The room in the club house was not. It was a lovely room, however it was very cold. Temperature outside was - 2 and the room didnt have sufficient heat sources to heat the room to an acceptable temperature

The coffee and tea was sited in front of one of the 2 radiators which didnt help. Some of the 20 people attending sat in their coat and scarfs for the whole 4 hour meeting. The hotel supplied a small portable radiator but this was half way through the meeting and wasnt enough to heat the room. The ladies toilets had a very sticky floor - not cleaned as it should be and unpleasant to walk on and the toilet was partly blocked.

We went back to the main hotel for lunch (and warmth) and that was OK - good choice of food and excellent sweet trolly - a standard that I would expect from the hotel.

Overall an enjoyable stay. The location is stunning and there are some excellent parts - rooms are lovely, the public areas are sumptious. The hotel is let down by the service - there don't appear to be enough workers - cleaners, bar staff - for the job required, and there are silly mistakes and no contingency planning for potential and actual problems, and no proactivity that one would expect from a hotel of this stature.

Room Tip: Rooms at front have lovely views. Several rooms are out of the main hotel and can be quite a distanc...

Thank you for writing your review. I can assure you that we have taken note of your feedback and we are trying to establish which day you stayed so that we can speak to the correct members of staff. Maintenance have also been included so that they can look into the heating issue. If you would like to contact us direct then this would help us with our investigations if the organiser of your conference hasn't already given us such feedback. Overall we are pleased that you did have an enjoyable stay and I do hope that you will give us another opportunity in future, maybe to return as a leisure guest. Thank you once again for your valuable comments.

“Amazing place. Thank You”

We were lucky enough to stay at Carden Park for 3 nights over New Year. There were 4 of us in 2 rooms. We were all out in the courtyard and the rooms were large and well furnished with easily controlled heating. The views over the grounds are spectacular. The staff were wonderful, friendly and happy! We had been in September and the Duty Managerr emembered us which was nice. New Years Eve was fantastic - the Carden Suite was beautifully decorated, staff were friendly and efficient and the food was out of this world. If anything let it down the group were possibly the weakest link. We had breakfast and dinner in Redmonds for the rest of our stay and the food was of the same high quality. I had 2 Spa treatments and my husband had one as well. The Spa and Leisure Club are of a very high standard. However the complimentary bathrobes are maybe best suited to a size 12 or below and you have to walk back through Spa reception to get to the treatment area. This is a relaxing and tranquil space and the whole experience was well worth the money. The swimming pool, sauna, aromatherapy room and jacuzzi were well used by our group, the ice cold bucket experience less so! However some parents seem to think it is acceptable to take boys aged 8-10 into the ladies changing room to get changed. These are communal rooms with only 1 cubicle enclosed by a curtain. It left me and other ladies feeling uncomfortable and we were stood clutching our towels around us, as we had been in the showers, until the boys had changed. I appreciate it would be very hard for the hotel to police this as all guests go through the same door to the changing rooms. ~Morgans Bar was also well used by our group and the staff were unfailingly polite and efficient even when run off their feet. It seemed that every guest in the hotel was in there one afternoon!
This was our 3rd or 4th New Year at Carden Park and we will definately be back.

Room Tip: Courtyard rooms are bigger and have a dressing area with large well-lit mirror

“what a treat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

If you have to spend your money anywhere for a short getaway spend it here. The hotel has a warm welcoming atmosphere with its cosy fires, library and wonderful grounds. There are lots of activities to take part for adults and children alike and our meal in the restaraunt was nothing short of outstanding. Really good value if you can get a package including a meal and not far from chester town centre. The spa is wonderful with underfloor heating. Just a lovely relaxing top class experience that is fantastic value for money.

Room Tip: always ask to see if there is an upgrade

“Will definitely return”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

We've just returned from a 2-night stay at the Carden Park as a treat for my dad's 60th birthday. I booked back in October and at the time of booking mentioned that it was for a special occasion. They remembered this and left a card in his room wishing him a happy birthday which I thought was a very nice touch.

We booked a Golf View King room for my dad and myself, my partner and our 2 year old Daughter stayed in a Standard King room. They'd put the rooms next to each other which was great and we weren't in the main building but in the rooms on the side. Having read some of the previous reviews regarding the noise from wedding parties etc I think this was probably a good thing. The hotel as you drive up to it is magnificent and the setting/grounds are lovely. The rooms were immaculately clean and well decorated and spacious. It's worth paying the extra if you can for the golf view king because the room was huge and the view across the course lovely.

It's only about a 15-20 min drive from the centre of Chester and about 2 miles up the road is a pub called the Egerton Arms where we had a lovely meal on the Saturday night; I'd highly recommend it there.

Breakfast was very good, my dad reckoned it was 'the best hotel breakfast' he'd ever had! We didn't eat an evening meal at the hotel so I'm not sure what this is like.

Overall a thoroughly enjoyable stay with just a few niggles to mention;

-We found out from a letter in our room that the spa was undergoing a refurbishment which affected the changing facilities (the letter suggested you change into a robe in your room and then traipse over to the spa?!) I feel quite strongly that we should have been made aware of this prior to our arrival.
-The friendliness of the staff was quite inconsistent; they were either very friendly or not very helpful at all as was the case with a male member of staff in the spa who was borderline rude when speaking to us/having another conversation with someone else in the background. He couldn't be bothered giving directions to the male changing area which at the time was upstairs and didn't offer us towels.
-The children's play area doesn't have anything for younger children - My Daughter is 2 and the climbing frame was too big for her to play on safely.
-The pool and surrounding area were quite cold, as was the jacuzzi.

I know this sounds like a bit of a list but they were only minor things and wouldn't put us off returning. It's a lovely hotel and somewhere we definitely hope to return to. I spent a lot of time reviewing hotels in the area and am very glad I made this choice, we all had a fantastic time there.

Room Tip: Definitely worth paying for the rooms overlooking the golf course.

After reviewing hotels in this area we are pleased that you chose to stay at Carden Park whilst celebrating your Dad's 60th Birthday. We are especially pleased that he found his breakfast to be the best hotel breakfast he had ever had. Thank you for also mentioning your rooms being immaculately cleaned and well decorated and spacious. We are also pleased that you enjoyed the views surrounding the hotel. During your visit however we had been updating our leisure facilities. We are sorry if this caused you any inconvenience but they are now fully open and much improved. We have also noted your comment regarding a male member of staff on reception and do apologise for his manner. Overall it's reassuring to know that you had a fantastic time and that you hope to return. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to write.
