“Clean, cheap & served us well!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

Myself and a friend used this hotel as we were attending a wedding at Chester Zoo. We didn't have a lot of money to spend so we looked for somewhere cheap and close by.

AFTER I booked, I decided to read the reviews on here and actually thought about cancelling, however with very little cash I didn't really have much choice.

We rocked up to the hotel and were greeted with an absolutely lovely and very friendly receptionist who checked us in, explained breakfast, nearby dining, nearby attractions, etc, and also about late night entry being through a different door.

It's very bed & breakfast, so you get a tiny bit of a homely feel from the hotel. We climbed the stairs to our room and were pleasantly surprised. It was a little old fashioned, but very clean and well looked after. The window was a little bit difficult, but that wasn't a problem for us.

We walked up Hoole Road to one of the nearby pubs and had something to eat before walking around a little high street nearby.

The next day, when we were leaving to go to the wedding, the receptionist rang a taxi for us and gave us a card with the cheapest taxi company's number on it for our return travel. We spent the rest of the day & evening at the wedding (which was extremely lovely!), and then returned to our hotel... using the other door to get in, without any issue whatsoever.

The next day, we checked out and had a chat with the receptionist who asked if we needed a taxi to the station. We said we'd be ok as we fancied the walk. We left Chester happy with what we got for our money.

Room Tip: We had a room facing the main road.

“Okay one night, but not impressive!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

We arrived at the Comfort in and from the outside it looks really well kept. Inside is very dated and in need of decoration. All the staff were very polite upon arrival and throughout our stay.

I had booked for a double room for my boyfriend and I. We were in room 110 which was a ground floor room, relatively easy to find. The room was quite small, it had a double bed with a small table either side of the bed, a desk and a small, old television. The en suite was very small and had a stand up shower in - no bath. Everything in the room was clean, but the shower could do with replacing as the sealant was going around the edges and the shower curtain was stained and an 'off white' as though it had been there for years! They provide minimal soap, shower gel in a sachet etc. We had 2 pillows each which were very thin, so I would advise to ask for extra pillows on arrival or take your own - we both had bad necks in the morning! The pillows also seem to fall down the back of the bed as the headboard is not attached and the beds are quite flimsy and easily move when just turning over! I should also mention that you can here the person in the next room cough and turn light switches on and off. Not somewhere for light sleepers. The view was non existant from this room, we had 3 windows all of which faced a brick wall or windows, this made the room quite dark but quieter as we were not facing the front of the hotel where the road is.

There was one room for dining in which was called the 'breakfast' room. It was about the size of a large lounge with seven tables in which was quite cramped when busy. The choice for breakfast is not impressive with only 5 choices of cereal, a croissant, yoghurt or toast.

The location was very good, we visited Chester Zoo, Blue Planet Aquarium, and the shopping mall and restaurants at Ellesmere Port. Chester Zoo is literally 5 minutes away in the car, the rest are about 15 minutes.

Don't stay here if you are used to 4* or 5* accomodation as it will be disappointing. If you are just looking for a one night stay and are not too fussy about decor etc then this would be appropriate.

Room Tip: Ask to be at the back for quietness, although walls are thing so it depends on your neighbours!

“Nice staff, average hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

We paid 45GBP per night for a double room. This is what you need to know:

Positive:

* friendly and helpful staff, who will help with providing plates etc. for takeaways, will advise and inform, will call taxis, etc.
* telephone in room
* ample, and free, parking
* reasonable location on a main road

Negative:

* internet, although advertised on the website we booked through as being available and free, was only accessible from rooms near reception, which ours was not. It was virtually impossible to use.
* the bathroom: shower curtain was old and dirty, fungus between the tiles, shower mat from the 1980s, lock on the door didn't work
* bedding old-fashioned (would have been perfect for my grandma's house in the 1980s)
* bed slid away from the wall at the slightest movement
* carpet very tatty
* room was opposite the kitchen, causing not only a miserable view but also strange lighting and smells all day
* gravel on the car park made it impossible to pull luggage on wheels. Not good for heavy suitcases.
* the chair the poor receptionists had to sit on was in awful shape.

Side note: this hotel turned out to be more expensive than travelodge, premier inn and ibis, some of which offered rooms at 19GBP a night for bookings made three weeks in advance. Considering the chains Comfort Inns are competing with, they seriously need to get with the times. It must be an embarrassment for the competent and friendly staff working there to work under such conditions.

“Cheap and cheerfull...........very noisy!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2011

I understand this is a budget hotel...and this is what we wanted for the 2 nights we stayed, but it is very run down. Most uncomfy bed ever!! The noise in the hotel was horrendous, not only from people staying and partying (not the hotels fault that!) but workmen, maintenance man starting drilling outside the room at 8am!!!
Hotel is a bout a 20 min walk from Chester which is fine.
There seemed to be a party of children staying as they were running around screaming very early!!! Nice of the parents to allow this!!
Very very disappointed, but as i say...budget and money value is good..just a shame there werent more considerate people staying/working there

“The Worst Chain Hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

person found this review helpful

Turned up, nice looking hotel in nice grounds. Inside was a little dated, but acceptably clean. So after dumping the bags, headded off to the city centre happy. (when there were very few people in the hotel). Came back around 11pm, and slept for around 3 hours no problem, (the next door rooms must have been empty at that time). Around 3am, was awoken by what seemed to be a party next door. The sound proofing of the hotel walls was apalling, and more akin to a pre-fab house. Im surprised that such thin walls are allowed in a hotel, especially a large international chain hotel. After the loudness had quietened down, it was still possible, without trying, to hear every conversation, floor-board, tap, shower, door, cupboard, fart and burp. Never had such a bad experience in a chain hotel. I have stopped in quieter youth hostels when i was younger. It makes TRAVEL LODGE and PREMIER INN look absoutely fantastic, at least the rooms are sound-proofed. And dont even get me started on the night porter......... couldn't speak a word of English, and told me to keep the noise down for reporting the party next door. He thought i was reporting my-self to him for making a noise, then when i protested he accused me of been part of the mafia. Surely anyone working in a English hotel should be able to speak good English. Fawlty Towers. Will not go again.

Room Tip: Dont even try, go to another hotel.
