The standard rooms as shown on the website are not all like that. The minute we walked into our room, we requested an upgrade - and were willing to pay for it. No rooms were available for the 2 nights.
Our room was a typical attic room:
The bathroom was so small that you couldn't readily dry yourself in it. It had a very tatty mirror and a toilet seat which wouldn't stand up - although as it is difficult for a man to stand in front of it with the slope of the roof there then it wasn't so much of a problem.
Sockets in the small bedroom could only be reached by getting down on your hands and knees - we are not as flexible as youngsters. Indeed it was dangerous using a small cable linked kettle, having to unplug it and get up from under the eves with it full of boiling water. It was also extremely awkward for my wife to dry her hair, having to move the mirror along and sit at the end of the dressing table. This again was after having to struggle to get down to the socket.
It was not even possible to stand up before or after getting into bed from one side.
The receptionist, although very pleasant and polite, seemed to unaware of the room's shortcomings and did make a small gesture by rebating us £10 per head per night - I would much rather have had a decent room. Her suggestion of making the complaint in writing to the manager was followed but no response was received.
The hotel itself is perfectly nice and the staff pleasant. Sorry to say, we will not return.
Room Tip: Insist that you do not get room 11 or 12

May we begin by thanking you for choosing to stay at the Aval Du Creux Hotel on Sark.
We regret that you were not informed at the time of your booking that you would be staying in one of our original Garret rooms. Unfortunately, due to the overwhelming popularity of the Aval du Creux Hotel this year we were unable at the time of your stay to offer you a room transfer. This would have been our immediate response had a room been available.
As you may be aware, the majority of Sark’s Hotels have all benefitted from considerable inward investment over the past 24 months. La Moinerie Hotel, The Dixcart Bay Hotel & Stocks Hotel were all closed down to allow major building works to be undertaken. Stocks Hotel and La Moinerie Hotel both reopened for this season and, along with The Aval du Creux Hotel, remain open throughout the remainder of the year offering visitors to Sark superb accommodation and wonderful service in unique and beautiful surroundings. The Dixcart Bay Hotel will be reopening its doors to the public next spring adding yet more choice for visitors to our beautiful island.
The Aval du Creux Hotel has itself been the recipient of substantial inward investment but unlike other hotels on Sark we elected to remain open throughout our refurbishment. This has resulted in us taking a much gentler approach to our work and to date twenty two of our twenty six rooms have been totally refurbished to a stunning standard leaving just four of our original rooms to be completed over the winter period, one of these being the room that you occupied during your visit. We hope you visit Sark again soon.
