“Snowy weekend”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

Despite varied reviews we booked a room in the hotel due to the location next to the cathedral. We had a good stay - Room 4 had a king-sized bed, effective double glazing, warm (snow outside) with an adequate bathroom with great shower. Parking is great if you can get a space. Ate in the hotel on the Friday night with good value sirloin steak and reasonably priced wine. Breakfast on both days was served by friendly staff, quality was excellent with freshly made porridge and scrambled eggs. Quite the best cooked menu for breakfast I have come across for ages, the buffet was ok but not exciting. The star of the show was the manager on duty - out clearing the snow on Sunday morning and presumeably standing in for staff stranded by the snow outside Ely! A good example of an improved town centre hotel.

“lunch”

Mean and disappointing, reminded me of the 1970's. I heard diner was no better. They need to up there game as to be honest it is not acceptable to have been ripped off in such a manner. The location and environment is fine and it seemed a pity that the kitchen is happy to serve up what they did. Colleagues of mine felt equally disappointed by the meal they had.

“Okay, but could do better on the cleanliness of the bathroom”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

people found this review helpful

I had not looked at the previous reviews prior to my stay, but just as I was writing this, I noticed the previous review by martinet7. My comments pretty much mirror the previous reviewer.

Room: The room was large, clean and had modern decor with a flat panel TV and tea/coffee making facilities. The bed was comfy as well. The downside was the en-suite bathroom that has really seen much better days. The toilet seat was loose, the grout was dis-coloured from age and there was exposed pipe work and loose panelling near the toilet and bath. It generally looked like it needed a bit of a good clean as well really. There were also hand marks on the bathroom door as well, it was just not nice. The door catch on the outside of the room door was also broken, so you had to close the door using a small hook that was in the middle on the f the door? or try and slam it closed. Equally the door lock on the inside looked like it was not very secure.

The bathroom had two bath towels on arrival and in the morning I had used one and left it in the bathroom to dry out over the shower screen, but assuming it may be replaced. On my return, the towel had been taken, but not replaced. Why not just leave it or replace it?

It seemed like the room had had a revamp, but the bathroom had been missed and some smaller attention to detail items had also been missed.

Restaurant: I thought the main courses were very reasonable and the steak I had was fine. The starter was a bit overpriced, but relative to other restaurants know a days. The restaurant/bar area was pleasant and the service prompt and efficient. No issues there and would eat there again.

Staff: As per a previous comment, the gentleman that I assumed is one of, or, the manager was very pleasant and welcoming. On check out by a young female member of staff, it was a slightly different story. Not rude, but not very personable either.

Parking: This is a little limited, but I managed to find a slot during the period of my stay.

Cost: at £99 per night, I must say that I have stayed at better for the money considering the condition of the bathroom. Perhaps I got unlucky with the room though?

The usual question I ask myself is would I stay again. The poor condition of the bathroom put me off so I think I would look around for other options.

Room Tip: Inquire about the age of the bathroom ?

“Some good, some not so good”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2011

Good - Central location with parking available, Room was warm and mainly well decorated, bed was very comfy. The secondary glazing meant the room was fairly quiet even though it overlooked the main road through Ely. Large choice at breakfast.
Not So Good - There were some sections of the room that had not been properly cleaned. These included the lights overhanging the bed were quite dusty whilst the radiator was very dusty and dirty. I suspect the inside of the radiator had not been cleaned in months if not years. There was an unsightly dribble mark left on the outside of the toilet and the the sink had not been thoroughly cleaned. At breakfast the coffee was tepid and I had to try to attract the attention of the busy waitress to try to get a refill. A pot or cafetierre left on the table would have been more convenient. We left written comments about some of these matters when we left the hotel.

“Trendy Towncentre Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2011

The Hotel is right in the middle of Ely, and directions downloaded from the internet are spot on. We arrived late, and check-in was swift. The room was cold, however warmed up within minutes of turning the radiator on. We found the room too dark, as it has low-energy lights, and so requested additional lighting which arrived within seconds and did the trick. I suspect the room had been re-decorated recently, and it was clean and comfortable. Everythibg worked-lashings of hot water.

The downstairs bar was modern and pleasingly decorated. There was a good range of real ale. Reasonably priced food was available, although we chose not to have a meal so late in the evening. Breakfast was freshly cooked and just the right size.

All the staff we spoke to where polite, helpful and efficient- So an ideal business stop-over, with the option of a walk round the town-centre.
