“Loved the privacy and how clean it was”

We arrived before check in time, so we had to wait a little because the B&B personnel comes just for that time. It was not a problem, because the specifies it clearly in the booking form. The toilette and shower was "shared", but there are so enough toilettes and shower that it was barely noticeable. The room was spacious, fresh, the bed was totally comfortable. The wifi was excellent and they let us to use the microwave oven and the fridge, so we could bought food at Asda, Tesco or Sainsbury's and cook it or put it into the common fridge, ABSOLUTELLY SAFELY. We definitely loved this stay and would be back.

“Don't stay here!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2011

We booked the Mowbray B&B for a wedding with a check in time of 12-2.00pm. This time is given by the hotel as the prescribed time you need to arrive to be greeted, unless you want to use a key code to get in. We arrived at 12 as we needed to walk to a wedding for 1pm and needed to change before we went. At 12.20 there was still no answer at the B&B so my husband phoned their number and she said she would come over and gave us the key code to get in.
We managed to get in at 12.30 to be met with unchanged and unmade beds from the previous occupants , white powder all over the hall carpet and there were pasties and remains of food and fruit all over the table and floor and cherry pips spat all over the bathroom floor. It looked like student digs used as a B&B at the weekend. The owner arrived at about 12.45 and said she was short staffed and didn't have any cleaners. She then proceeded to strip the beds and her manner wasn't helpful. We had to leave as the wedding started at 1pm, and we had to get dressed in the car.

The website states a friendly welcome but there was no one there at the prescribed check-in time and when we did meet the manager who was abrupt. We didn’t feel that it was an environment we would want our toddler staying in and we certainly didn’t want her to touch anything due to the lack of cleanliness. The Mowbray then took £65 from our account under the name Brooklands guest house even though we didn't stay. We booked the room via booking.com but they state they are not responsible for taking payment so won't challenge the payment.

“Not as described in the booking details.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2010

There was no warm welcome just a phone call to tell me the code to get in the house which was quiet clearly a student home.
Clearly no maintenance carried out to the property.
Lots of noise when the students came in and stayed up till late.
I never saw the owner over the 3 night stay.
Breakfast was dismal.
Money was taken from card prior to commencement of stay.
Never again.

“Basil Fawlty lives ! !”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 March 2009

In their defence , the room was warm and the bed was comfortable.

On the downside , the "breakfast" is laughable. The breakfast tray consisted of one cup , one spoon , one bowl , one small box of corn flakes, one small carton of orange juice. One cup between two people is unacceptable. My advice to the owner would be , get yourself to Netto's , spend 49p , and buy another cup.
There was some sachets of jam , but the only thing to spread the jam on was my girlfriends breasts, but she wasn't keen because there was no plug in the bath , so washing it off was going to be difficult.

This place has the potential to be good , but the owners penny pinching attitude drags it back. Why was the bill deducted from our card before we booked in ? This is not normal practice in the Hotel industry.

Customer care just does not exist in this establishment. Never again.

“Not very good”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2008

The house was warm and clean, which is about as far as I can go in the positives.

On the other side, the staff (who weren't the owners as they seem to live elsewhere) were not friendly, especially the man who took our key in the morning, and the house has barely been converted from its original purpose. There was virtually no storage space for clothes, there was only one bedside table and light for the double bed and the whole place had the air of a (non) conversion done on the cheap.

And the "continental breakfast" was a bad joke: packets of instant coffee (which weren't replenished overnight) long-life juice and milk, a couple of packets of cereal, two packets of biscuits - and two packets of jam (what were we supposed to do with this: spread it on the biscuits?).

Finally, at £58 a night this wasn't cheap and it certainly wasn't cheerful. We wouldn't stay there again or recommend it to anyone else, and giving it a two-blob rating is being very generous.

  • Liked — It was at least clean and warm
  • Disliked — Everything else!
