“Cold outside but not inside”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

We stayed for two nights as it was my girlfriends 40th birthday, we took our greyhound as the hotel is dog friendly. I arranged flowers to be put in our room through the hotel. I can't fault the room or the staff both were better than I expected. The hotel was nice and warm which was just as well as we saw -13 degrees outside. Opposite is a huge grassed park where we could walk the dog and it had plenty of poo bins. Museums and shops are a short walk away, just watch out for the cyclists who are every where it being a university city.
Breakfast was very good and is served in the restaurant. We had dinner in the restaurant both nights and that is where things could be improved. The waiting staff are very good and friendly. I had lamb the first night and it tasted and looked just like steak, this was because of the way it was cooked (so I was told). As a steak it tasted fine so other than expecting it to taste like lamb I had no complaints. The second evening my girlfriend ordered fishcakes and got a salad as a starter, that went back and we got what we ordered. It was the chefs error and the waiting staff were very apologetic. I had duck as a main the breast was very chewy but everything else was A1. I would suggest that you look at the menu carefully, the chef likes to mix and match and you may not see that the seafood comes in a salsa sauce rather than a cream sauce (which I hoped for) my girlfriend had this and said it was really good. Overall the food got a 85% from us. Staff 110%. Hotel and bar 100%.

“Comfortable hotel in Cambridge”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

I spent 2 nights in the Gonville recently and can thoroughly recommend it despite a couple of glitches. The first was the fact that the fire alarm went off twice on the first night of my stay, apparently this had happened on the previous night also. A note of apology was placed at reception but as you book a room in order to sleep a little gesture to guests whose sleep was disturbed would have been welcome - and good public relations, eg £10 reduction in charge, a drink in the bar, even a cup of coffee or a few sweets. Just a gesture especially as the false alarm occured twice

There was a slight confusion with my booking but I had brought my documentation with me and the matter was soon sorted.

As someone who hates the cold I was concerned that my room might be cold and asked for an extra blanket - got a light quilt. However, my fears were groundless as the heat stayed on all night and temperature was very comfortable - on two very cold nights. Very cosy.

About the room - bed and pillows perfect for me, though some might find bed a bit firm. No wardrobe, rather hangers attached to a panel on the wall. This means that clothes are effectively resting on each other which might be a problem at times. Also, no drawers - this seems to be a growing trend in hotels. I think that most people would prefer that underwear is out of sight in a drawer, also needed for items like folded shirts, t-shirt etc.

Breakfast was excellent. Self-service for cold items and hot breakfast from an extensive choice, served. Service was very efficient and friendly. I did not dine in the hotel but menu looked interesting.

Staff at reception courteous and helpful at all times - especially the young man whose name I unfortunately did not note, ordering taxis and searching for my phone which I left behind in room

Hotel rooms are limited in Cambridge and therefore prices are always quite high though I got a good deal on b&b on this occasion. The Gonville is within easy walking of the town centre and overlooks Parkers Piece - which looked lovely in the snow on my second morning. So, to summarise the location is good, the service is good, accommodation is comfortable and breakfast is excellent. There is parking in the hotel grounds.

I have stayed here before and will again - if able to get a good deal! (Have to watch the pennies like most pensioners nowadays!)

Room Tip: Try to get a room at the front where you overlook Parkers Piece, always something interesting to wat...

“Ok with some faults”

As a business traveler, I am a regular visitor to the Gonville. The location is excellent and the free parking absolutely necessary in Cambridge.
The staff is always friendly and helpful, the breakfast buffet suitable for the price. The rooms are always clean and spacious. All in all not a bad deal. Now for the dark side: because the power is only on if the keycard is in its slot (i.e. if you are in the room), get ready for a cold welcome if you are visiting in winter. On my last stay, I had 15°C when I arrived and it took quite a while for the weak heating to bring it up to an acceptable temperature.
Also, in most of the rooms the shower and the bathroom floor are at the same level, only separated by glass for half the width. This mean you have to be very careful not to flood the bathroom (and your slippers) when showering.

Firstly may I thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback, I was very pleased to see that you found our location to be excellent. The parking in Cambridge can often be limited and very expensive however I hope that you found our free parking added value to your stay with us.

We are always encouraging our team to give the best service possible at all times and please be assured I will be passing your comments onto them. Breakfast we feel is the most important meal of the day and we spend a lot of time monitoring and reviewing this to ensure we get it right for our guests so that they have plenty of choice.

With regards to the power in the room, being conscious of our carbon footprint and to be as green as we can, our newly refurbished spacious bedrooms are quite rightly as you say designed to activate the power when the key card is in the slot, however as a precaution the heating system, as sophisticated as it is turns on automatically when the temperature reaches 14c . However we found with the very low temperatures experienced last week that this was too low and as we want to ensure our guests are comfortable, have since taken action to ensure that all rooms are at around 20 degs. Our sub contractor is currently making suitable adjustments to the system,.

I was also pleased to see that you had experienced our new wet rooms; we also have rooms with a bath if needed.

Once again thank you for your comments

“where to stay in Cambridge”

Although slightly on the pricey side for what it is, the central location and the car parking facilities compensate. The staff were very personable, extremely helpful and efficient save for a member of the management whom I believe is called Mr. Watson and whom I found unpleasantly officious.Fortunately ,the other members of staff with whom I had contact made up for Mr. Watson's shortcomings .

“So much better than we were expecting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We were attending a dinner last Saturday at one of the Cambridge colleges so needed a hotel that was fairly central and not too pricey as we were not going to be in the city for long. Our last stay was at the Hotel du Vin which was lovely, but to be honest we appreciated the food more than the room, and this time we knew we wouldn't be eating at the hotel. As the room-only price at the Gonville was £75 cheaper, plus the hotel offered free parking (unlike the Hotel du Vin where you have to pay about £18 per day to park) we thought it was worth taking a risk, despite the rather dismal-looking photographs on the website.

How glad we were! We were assigned a newly-refurbished room which, although rather small, was very comfortable and tastefully decorated in a contemporary style. The bathroom was very smart with a walk-in shower and granite basin surround. Everything was spotlessly clean and the bedding was top quality.

We paid for breakfast in advance which turned out to be a bargain, with plenty of cold items and fresh pastries as well as a cooked menu (we both had grilled kippers which were lovely).

All the staff we met in our short time at the hotel were very polite and attentive and it had a friendly, small hotel feel. Our only criticism was that in the middle of the night someone opened the door to our room and then went out again, which was worrying as the doors are only supposed to open with the card keys handed out to guests. We mentioned this on departing and the staff seemed genuinely concerned, so it could have been an honest mistake but it might be a good idea to use the door chain at night (we didn't). Fortunately, there is a decent safe provided in the room for valuables when you are out.

All in all, we were so pleased we took a chance and would definitely book again for a short stay in the city.

Room Tip: Not sure how many have been refurbished but if not all, then ask for one that has!
