“Hotel serves its purpose, average.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

The hotel was advised by the conference I was attending, so that's why I stayed there. The personnel was OK, helpful but not more than that. Breakfast was included and fine as well. I did not try any of the extra options that you could order. Initially it was not clear that there was an extra menu, so I thought that everything was included and was hoping for an English breakfast. Unfortunately it was quite expensive so i decided not to take it.

The rooms were OK and the location was fine as well.

Good afternoon
Thank you for your comments regarding your recent visit. Having only limited details from your review I am unable to answer fully your complaints. However I can clarify that guests booking bed and breakfast are entitled to a full English breakfast as shown on the breakfast menus. If you were unsure of what was included our breakfast supervisor or duty manager would have been happy to help answer your queries. I hope you welcome you back to the hotel in the future. regards DianeThompson

“Great position. Average place to stay.”

Poor introduction to this hotel, arrived at 12.00 and told to go away as rooms are not ready until 2.00pm. I had driven for 4 hours to arrive in Cambridge in time to watch the Man U v Liverpool game, I asked if they had a tv I could watch the game on and was gobsmacked that in 2012 the hotel had no residents tv.

The rooms are dated but ok. The breakfast was just about adequate. The conference rooms were unremarkable. All in all a very average stay.

Alternatives in Cambridge.
For a more memorable location go to the University Arms. For better value try the Gonville Hotel. For a luxurious experience try the Hotel du Vin.

Room Tip: Avoid the front rooms they overlook the busy Trumpington Rd

Good afternoon
Thank you for taking the time to comment regarding your recent visit to the hotel. Firstly may I extend my sincere apologies for the lack of customer care you encountered at reception upon check in. I have spoken direct to my head receptionist who will speak to her team regarding check in procedure. Although your room may not been ready upon your arrival the receptionist should have contacted the housekeeper to get your room ready or indeed moved you to a room already serviced if possible. i am extremely embarrassed and under no circumstances should you have been turned away. Unfortunatley due to the layout of the hotel we do not have a TV in the public areas. The hotel is dated but we are hoping for a full refurshment in the near future and in the interim period we are rolling out an internal redecoration plan to freshen up the hotel. Thank you for your comments and I hope you will consider giving us a second chance in the future. regards Diane Thompson

My wife and i stayed here 15 years ago and remember thinking at the time it could do with a spruce up 15 years on it definitely could.Found the staff actually pretty heldpful but there were quite a few functional problems with the room............hot water coming from cold tap/ no heating in bedroom too hot in the toilet very noisy due to single glazing though i suspect that has something to do with it being a listed building and worst of all the TV didn't work :( Actually a bit of a shame really i suspect it requires a huge investment which they may be reluctant to do?Cooked breakfast for £15 seemed a bit steep...........

God morning
Thank you for your review. I was disappointed to read that your expectations were not met by the standards within the hotel. Our new parent company are in discussion with the landlords regarding a full refurbishment of the hotel including structural (windows) and internal decoration. Whilst this is progressing at hotel level I have started a redecoration plan to try and freshen the bedrooms and public areas. I was sorry to read you had issues with the heating and hot water as this work has been completed recently and is 100% improved. I will ensure my maintenance manager checks this immediately along with the TV. I do hope you will reconsider using the hotel again in the future and thank you for your comments.#regards

“Average (or maybe less than average)!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

Stayed here one night in January 2012. As described by the other reviewers the hotel is a little bit outdated, but as I understand it the management is trying to renovate the building so they are aware of the problems. However being a listed building is not an excuse for bad windows for example, it is possible to get the same sash and case windows with modern double glazed glass. My room was spacious, clean and the bed comfortable. The TV however was not working properly, and the remote was broken. Breakfast was not included in my room rate and it costs 14£ or 10£ if its prebooked (Seems quite expensive)! Good location though. Would I stay here again: if there is no alternative yes! I guess this is the typical UK hotel in a popular place that can avoid investments to improve things for years simply because of the location.

Good morning
Thank you for your review. I am delighted to read you enjoyed your stay albeit the hotel is rather tired, and as stated we are addressing the problem. Refurbishment discussions are still taking place which would encompass the strutural issues of windows as well as the aesthetic internally meantime we have started internal redecorations. . I was sorry to read your TV did not work properly I have had my maintenance manager check this and all is ok. I hope to welcome you back to the hotel in the near future.

“A bit of a time warp”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

Very well located impressive building but the interior really did need refurbishing there was a generally shabbiness from a bygone era about it. Furnishing and fittings in the bedrooms were very worn and of 'flat pack' quality although bed reasonably comfortable. Rooms small. Breakfast was waiter/waitress service and the staff had difficulty coping with the number of guests requiring breakfast when they started serving although when it eventually arrived the food was well cooked. A colleague and I ate in the restaurant on our arrival evening and the service was impeccable but the food was cold. Throughout my stay, the staff could not have been more helpful and polite but that did not really compensate for the poor quality of the bedrooms and the kitchen's inability to cope with the number of guests they were catering for. Rooms at the front of the hotel do suffer somewhat from road noise.

Good afternoon
Thank you for your comments regarding your visit to the hotel. We are in discussion with the landlords in order to carry out a refurbishment of the property, and I am hoping this will be authorised in the near future.
I was sorry to read you had problems with both breakfast and dinner in the hotel, I am not sure if you spoke to our duty manager to resolve these issues at the time? Please accept my sincere apologies for the shortfall in the level of service you received, there can never be any excuse as to why our standards should fall short of our customer expectations and I have spoken direct to our kitchen brigade.
I do hope you will give us a second chance in the future.
